It was first used in minesweepers and then in the 60's in British locomotives, there were two power units in the loco's
18 cylinder Triangular opposed piston two stroke diesels

The twin ports are the exhaust ports and the single port is the scavenge blown inlet port.
the exhaust piston has a 20 degree lead on the inlet piston.

Beautiful sounding engine.
