RE: Ferrari 512TR: PH Carpool
Discussion
Looking forward to that.I remember J clarkson doing a Ferrari special program back in the 90s which featured the 456gt at the end at about the time of its release if anyone remembers it.There was a 512tr at the start on a track and to this day I have never heard a car sound so good.

If the weather is still decent towards the end of the week I'll get it set up with a decent sound recorder and get a little clip for the audiophiles among you
Thanks for all the kind comments, its great to see I'm not alone in my appreciation for the old girl.

Not great stuff though as I struggled to get space on the road to really open it up, traffic was heavy everywhere, and also had some problems with the sound recorder adjusting the gain automatically - will try again some time. Starts with a cold start, then moved the recorder inside the engine bay for a 2nd start which is a bit more representative of the real "bark" you get on startup.

Can hear the real depth of the sound in the recordings whilst at rest. Very full sounding. Very nice! The moving bits sound a lot compressed and tinny, as you say due to the automatic adjustment of the levels.
The second run (the gear lever shot) sounded better though.

A great write up, one used to share my bedroom wall with Samantha Fox, well it was a Testarossa, bit near enough.
Yes - truly beautiful car - far more beautiful than Sam Fox!A great write up, one used to share my bedroom wall with Samantha Fox, well it was a Testarossa, bit near enough.
Pedant's corner:
I think the "flat 12" vs "V12" argument really arises not because Ferrari call it "flat" which it pretty much is, but because they call it a "boxer" which it isn't (that's what the second "B" of 512BB stands for as if you guys didn't know). Ferrari have admitted it is poetic licence. To be even more pedantic, though the engine in my 911 IS a boxer technically, I never refer to it as such because there are 6 pots. And a boxer engine is so named as the configuration looks like two boxers' fists squared up to each other - and boxers don't have 3 hands... (am I really explaining this?). Therefore my 'Sud had a boxer engine but my 911 has a flat six - as far as I am concerned.

Greg, are those standard exhausts? Nice video btw.
No, they were custom made for a previous owner - nice balance of giving a bit more volume than the standard without being overwhelming. I'd like to try a set of fuchs pipes or similar but there's no realistic way to hear a system in the flesh so buying something else is risky.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

great write-up!
