Thought I'd share and see if anyone can suggest what they're doing.

Basically several evenings this week a at dusk a pair of Helicopters have descended over our sailing club pretty low and hovered;

They've then disappeared for a few hours and returned when it's dark and virtually pitch black.

This time they've gone even lower so that the "skids" are very nearly if not actually touching the water.

It's not causing any problems/issues but just wondered if anyone can suggest who and why!

But what sort of Training and aren't there minimum heights etc?

Secret squirrel training. The Royal Marines also operate this version of Lynx, in this camouflage scheme.

Minimum height can be zero feet in the right circumstances.

The one to the left looks like it has a wheeled undercarriage, so could be one of the new Wildcats being tested in covert ops.

That isn't a wildcat. It has skids, the perspective makes the skid supports look like wheels.

Presumably to drop divers of some description.

Probably just dropping some beer off, and coming back to pick it up later when it's cool enough... wink

Special forces divers would be my guess Lynx being an ideal deployment aircraft for a small detachment of SBS.

That's make sense, they tend to hover a bit higher, say 10m-ish when just fishing.

We're near Rugby/Coventr and no one is getting in or out of them on any of their visits which is why we're wondering what they're practicing, where they're from and why they've chosen our "Pond"

I'm the muppet who just posted a similar pic before deleting the thread. I can assure you the lead Lynx was on wheels...I thought it was a navy version until I thought "erm, camo!"

What's a Wildcat then and what's it doing buzzing our sailing club?

The Mk9 Lynx is usually seen on big fat wheels. The older Lynx are usually seen on Skids. Navy Lynx are usually seen on little wheels. Wildcat is the brand new tarted up version of the Lynx and usually seen on big fat wheels.

Agreed - they are using the lake to practice in/ex fil. I would just let them get on with it in peace.

The forward lynx is what's colloquially known as a 'wheelie bin' because of the fixed strut wheel arrangement. Wouldn't be surprised if the floors on all the version of the Lynx are the same and so have the fittings for the front nose wheel and pylon supports built in making this useability mod pretty easy.

I can see what you're all suggesting but with no-one getting in/out still seems a bit odd to me as to why they're using this piece of water in the midlands for it.
