I prefer to use jim beam as a) generally cheaper than jack and b) has a sweeter taste.
So yeah, that's about the advancement of my whiskey tasting skills.
Not a fan of drinking it neat, I just love the subtle taste of whiskey. It was a lynchburg or laidback lemonade that got me hooked on whiskey based drinks.
Also, whiskey with diet ginger ale (3 for £1.20 in Sainsburys) is only 60-70 calories and tastes awesome.
Maybe when I'm older one day... I'll be drinking the 'good stuff' neat.

Used to drink Jack Daniels years ago, but now I really couldn't touch the stuff, the thought of it makes me So yeah, that's about the advancement of my whiskey tasting skills.

. Have you tried Bulleit Bourbon, I find it preferable to JD and Jim Beam.
As far as mixers go, ginger can be nice and I'd recommend Rochester Ginger Drink from Holland & Barrett (3 big bottles for a tenner), it's the best I've tasted.

Lucky sod!

I do have one challenge for you, if you're a coffee drinker. Apparently Debbies in bruichladdich is the place for good coffee on the island. However, there's a new place opened upstairs at Celtic House in Bowmore (I think that's what it's called, book shop and ornament shop), and also Fly Cuppa at the airport. I need to find the best cup of coffee on the Island for next time I go

Ok, before we road trip to Campbeltown we're going to take advantage of FlyBe's new route to Islay, and head there for a few days in July.
But, how flipping expensive is accommodation there? Standard B&B with an en-suite is £100 a night, hotels £130-150 for an ok one. Self catering places no cheaper as they all want a weeks' booking.
So, anyone got any tips for reasonably priced places to stay on Islay? Preferably Port Ellen or Bowmore I think.

What do you mean by reasonable? Suspect there's large demand for what accommodation there is, so it attracts strong prices...
I loved the Old Excise House in Laphroaig. Walking distance from Port Ellen, and the rooms are very well appointed. Plus the help from Ron and Emma in knowing where to go, what to do, help booking things, and finding spots off the beaten track was invaluable.

My missus found these, so we booked one:

They get a great review on TripAdvisor, and it'll be good to have our own space. Almost half the price of a grotty B&B as well!

good shout... i love islay but the accommodation on the island is shockingly expensive at easily 3 figures per night for even the grottiest place, so something like this looks like an excellent place to stay.http://islay-pods.co.uk/

Cannot agree more. They really made Islay enjoyable and Emma is a very good baker. Oh an Lapgroaig is about 5 minutes stumbling distance away!I loved the Old Excise House in Laphroaig. I'll also add into that equation - the Gaelic College. From what I remember last year the cakes were great but I'll make a point of checking the coffee out
