Some great ideas folks - think I'm pretty much sold on the following:

Narrowed down thoughts to:
Mustang
Corvette (but can't see a C5 in budget)
M3 (or possibly an Alpina variant)
Porsche 996
Porsche 964 targa
Mini JCW GP

The soft tops and classic cars will have to wait for another day when have a garage!

Much overdue update...

So having thought i was going to be temporarily rich in January a variety of circumstances delayed my Scrooge Mcduck lifestyle change so it was only last week that i could start swimming around my lake of gold coins. So now i have cash, want to spend 10k max...unless it was a perfect Porsche with a warranty.

And of course, now I'm Actually looking there seems much less choice around!

have decided against the m3/rs options, has to be special in a "never gonna be able to do this again" way. As per original post, this is a short term car and in an ideal world want to get something with a long mot and well looked after.

Will keep you updated as search progresses, any ideas or recommendations chuck them my way, must be within 100 of miles of Southampton.

Any thoughts why this Porsche wouldn't be perfect other than fact is a private sale so no warranty? http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2013...

I don't like buying from dealers anyway, just get it inspected. But, before you do anything, see if you can get some feedback from the company who serviced it!

Carpets look scruffy and I'm always suspicious about people who replace one tyre, not in pairs, though there could be an explanation.

Have seen a few for sale, are the big jobs considerably cheaper though - few horror stories of the engines going (both 996 and Boxster)?

Like the Boxster but only if I couldn't find a 911 within my criteria...anyone had/experienced both?

you know about IMS bearings I take it.

If your worried about spending a lot of money then i'd be looking at a 996 thats been rebuilt/upgraded bearing.

Update - looked at a Z4 (2.5) on a whim but although it was in good nick and a long way within budget just didn't do it for me.

Didn't feel fast and neither the engine nor exhaust made any sort of aural drama. Maybe the 3 litre is more inspiring?

Has made me realise how nice it is to have the roof down on a car though. And that I'm shallow and need the car to interest me visually - am a big fan of the Z4 shape but in black paint, with a black interior and dull alloys it wasn't the sort of car I'd look back at after parking it up.

So some valuable insights to my car buying psyche learnt there. Seen a Boxster 3.2 S that appeals so might check that out later this week. biggrin

It doesn't matter how great or PH a car is, it has to be something you really want.... and preferably stupid with it. wink

Nah, not yet - had an interesting chat with a 996 owner at weekend - just wanting to test drive a variety of cars and then think something will leap out at me!

Found myself worryingly admiring a parked up Daihatsu Copen at weekend god help me!

Well, I've done it!

Pushed the budget to just under 12 and got a 2001 996 Cab with 91k on the clock. Being serviced, MOTd and suspension being refreshed this week plus Lepsons are refurbing alloys. I can pick it up next Saturday.

Felt was worth the extra for a warranty and the engine was rebuilt by Hartech about 18 months ago.

Will post up piccies next week but looking forward to getting it.

Sun + convertible = impulse buy!

Top stuff, fella. Take it to Northway (just outside Thatcham) for servicing. They are excellent and very reasonable
