i live up on the edge of the fens, in a village outside huntingdon. my office is in huntingdon. a daily commute, especially away from rushhour, is a joy providing the weather is not st. Hence clocking up 5k miles on my bmw since getting my license almost exactly one year ago

I've ridden into central london and then home again just once. It was terrifying. Seriously, I dont know how you city bikers cope. The madness of the car/van/truck driver seems to have no limits. And the apparent invincibility of some bikers left me gasping.

Sorry, its car or train for me to meetings in london. Call me a pussy, but even after 5k miles, I'm not ready for that experience again in a hurry.

I've done 1 year now commuting into London. 22 Miles each way. Only 2 days I haven't been able to due to snow.

The driving is terrible but I expect it now. It doesn't worry me but I never get complaicent or under estimate peoples stupidity.

There was a bad one on the A4 between Earls Court area and Hammersmith on the other side of the carriageway when we were coming out of the city on Sunday evening...the road was closed right backto where the motorway ends/starts.

looked like the biker was dead tbh....didn't want to post "another biker crash thread" at the time.

Stay Frosty.

Edit to add: along this bit, the dead biker was on the city bound side of the carriageway.

I'm getting on so I am very much aware of my mortality and I almost dread the London commute, which I don't do often, but lately I have been heading out of SW London to Beckton via that stretch of the A13 on a regular basis.

Once I am on the bike, I love it and really get into it. Maybe It's because I cut my teeth as a dispatch rider back in the 80s biggrin

I worry more about the other bikes, especially the scooters and bicycles. Its almost gladiatorial out there.

I've been driving/riding into London quiet a bit at weekend (just for the hell of it) with the Mrs.

I've noticed that many bikers don't do lifesavers these days...nearly had a scooter when he switched lanes as if he was invincible ..if I hadn't braked he'd have hit us.

yep I know all about our mortality too thanks.

Know this bit of road very well. Not a biker so apologies for invading but I wish the chap involved a speedy recovery. Assumed this was a fatal to be honest frown

Before the average speed went in it was, in my opinion even more frightening further East towards Dagenham etc with the differences in traffic speed (80/40) and heart breaking to see all the wreckage and bunches of flowers at the side of the road frown You bikers have my utmost respect for braving this st every day - it's sketchy enough in a tin box!

I think you should stay away to be honest with your 80cc's of pure power and failed brakes.

I couldn't think of anything worse.

Liam "mad" is not really the word for it tbh...more brain dead.
driving/riding in London is a doddle, but have your wits about you (if you have any).

As I've said in other threads:
Just ride as if everyone is out to get you, hasn't seen you, trying to kill you....and you will be fine.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to ride in the city on a stupid little piece of st either.

As I said, Gladiatorial.

More often than not I use public transport for my SW London to Beckton commute but I have to allow 2 hours yikes each way. It's only 15 miles but the best I've done is 1hr 15mins, usually 1.5 hours.

On the bike it's 35mins, even when it's gridlock.

Hey, signed up just to post this.

The rider was a friend of mine as well, he was a great a guy. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries today. This is a massive shock, I still can't quite believe it.

RIP
