I'm curious... and obviously rather naive... what happens to the car now? Is it stripped for parts? They couldn't sell it whole could they? Surely it would be tricky to move-on whole?

We don't want it back really. It's soured our ownership experience, and we'd no longer feel safe owning a BMW again.
Probably parked up in a quiet part of an industrial state where it will be left for a week or so to see if it has a tracker fitted, or in a container out the country where if you have a tracker it won't be effective.

This.

M Sports get broken for parts

Others get shipped abroad

Was it an M sport? Presume no tracker?

My wife can't tell me what it was - she thinks "sport" but not "M sport". 3-litre diesel. Bit rich using the word "sport" for that, no? smile

I'll find out.

No tracker.

Well, hopefully it turns up chap

As you've said earlier, even if you had the update you'd still have a damaged car after them trying for it.

Others have even suffered vandalism when thieves couldn't programme a new key due to the update

Maybe replace with an Audi or Merc!

Police this morning said there's been a spate of Audi and BMW thefts. Three week Audi from around the corner went.

I have a MY08 Merc ML which we've had for 3 years. Hope that means no-one wants it. Bit worried about it now.

We don't want the BMW back really. Although it'll end up costing us a lot in terms of "loss" I'd rather move on and buy with our eyes "more" open next time.

I can completely see where your coming from here, I wouldn't want a stolen car back after its been ragged by some thieves. My dad ended up having his tracker on his X5 deactivated as it made no difference to the insurance after the first year and didn't want it back if it did get nicked

Went to use our X5 this afternoon. No sign of break in but the doors were unlocked and door bins and glove box had been rifled through....and what I assume is the OBD port in the passenger footwell had been accessed. Now it is possible that by accident the car could have been left unlocked by accident (it has happened before) as we have young kids and sometimes you get distracted when unloading kids and all the st that goes along with it.

The car has had the update done but am obviously worried they'll be back. It's parked in the street (live in London NW3) so going to park it far enough away that they'll be lucky to find it and speak to BMW on Tuesday when the local dealer is open.

Report it too the Police as well, it may tie in with some other incidents in the area.

Hi all. Not sure I can find the info I'm looking for through the 169 pages, but I have an 06 e61. Is this one of the cars with the black spot in the obd port area?

If so, I assume I need to force my dealers into updating the CAS module? I only acquired the car in January, any easy way to tell if I have the updated version?

I would have thought BMW would try to mitigate this in every possible way. Window stickers advising scrotes that the car is no longer nickable doesn't seem too far fetched. Wonder why they haven't thought of that.

Think I may buy one of those full steering wheel covers, might look unsightly but better than letting some arse get your car. I do think that we should be able to shoot car thieves on sight.

Pretty sure i have read earlier in this thread that they're not much of a barrier to a motivated tea leaf.

Does it have a proper key? If so I think they are OK.

It has an electronic key, which you push the entire fob into the ignition in the usual place a key might go. The car does have a key, but you have to slide it out of the fob to use it

Bad luck, Cheib. There is an epidemic of theft of nice cars in North London. In the last decade, I've had an M3 stolen from Hampstead and an M5 (recovered) and X5 from Highgate, as well as two attempted thefts. The cars are garaged now.

Well I think you need it up grading then with the fix.

But as his car is pre March '07 won't the dealer refuse to do the update all the same? Despite all the posts on this topic here and in other places, I think I have still yet to hear of anyone who has successfully got a BMW dealer to do the update on an earlier car, unless I am mistaken. Specialist coders / indies have done it though, proving that the BMW cut off is pretty arbitrary at best...

I will give the dealer a prod and see how they react.

A Disklock won't stop a truly determined thief, but it will make it a hell of a lot more difficult for these scumbags than the BMW oem security.

I understand that they cannot be removed without having serious cutting equipment and making some noise - neither are a concern for the thieves with just the (unupgraded) BMW security.

What's more, the Disklock is obvious enough to deter even the initial break in if the thief isn't properly equipped - something that even the upgraded BMW security will not offer.
