Days of Thunder? It's absolutely hilarious. None of it intentional, mind, but I could watch it over and over for it's sheer awfulness. And it still stands as having the best lead character name of all time....Tom Cruise stars as Cole Trickle...

did the F1 cars of the time really do this?

Yes

Jackie Stewart Nurburgring 1968 (I think)
Different era, and a very noticeable lack of wings on the front of that car. I'm going to shoot my own theory in the foot by posting this though: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxJtpQoepac

Big front wings, lots of surface area and he didn't take off. Admittedly he was going pretty slow, but still... The only other recent-ish takeoff clips I could find involved hitting the back of someone else's car. Which is obviously cheating.
Jackie stewart 1969. Note the wings on that car smile

Those wings are still pointing down, relative to the motion vector. Nice try though, wink

Think you will find that was about Sir Jackie Stewart.

Might be worth a watch, but it's going to be a tough balance to strike between the racing and the soap opera.
Actually it was neither but in fact Ronnie Peterson. Jackie Stewart was a good friend of George and appeared in the video smile
