Its hard to be joyful and jovial when the same threads crop up each week. Tyres that get supplied with bikes are often total rubbish, I got 6 punctures on my first ride with Conti Ultra Sports, straight in the bin and that was the last of the issues.

2000 miles on Bianchi spec tyres and no punctures and 100 miles on fancy dan ones and 3 in 2 rides so I bought Conti GP 4000s and all is well again! smile

try pumping up your tyres as hard as they are meant to be inflated - in 40+ years of road riding I have only ever had 2 punctures, but 160PSi is my best buddy!

It sounds like you guys who get repeat punctures are just replacing tubes. Sorry if that's not the case OP but that's how it read.

I prefer to pump some air back in, find where the hole is at act accordingly.

If it's on the rim side of the tyre, this test would have identified a rim tape issue really quick.

If it is a thorn, it helps you find it as they can be really hard to find without this test.

Sorry to point out the obvious but it seems people have stopped doing the obvious! biggrin

I'm the same, some of my tubes are more patch than tube smile

Not really, but some do have a fair few patches on them

Awful ride, dire grip and that of course assumes the rims can take such pressures.

My personal experience. Tyres you get on almost all new bikes, even expensive ones, are comprised on puncture protection and/or grip, especially wet grip. Buying expensive but not necessarily with good puncture protection, Michelin pro 3s, was a waste of time. 95kg, punctured almost every time out, invariably on the rear. Went out expecting to get a puncture. Moved to Michelin Krylions and now using the Pro 4 endurance that have superseded them and can't remember the last time I punctured, have done 3,500 miles this year and no punctures. Running pressures between 100-115psi.

I had 'one of those evenings' on tonights ride. Aside from an exploding tyre last week I have not had a flat since last summer, and I can't remember when before that.

Tonight I fitted a couple of Open Corsa CX's, pumped them up to 120psi, and set off for a quick 45 miler in howling wind and pouring rain. 24 miles in, the front tyre picked up a bit of flint that could have split a truck tyre in two and went psssssst, no problem - stick on my spare tube (no point in messing around with patches as it was pee-ing down and everything was wet). 10 mins later I am a tad cold but back on the road, another 7 miles down the road I picked up a flat on both tyres thanks to broken glass hidden in a huge puddle - game over, team car called and one wet and very pissed off MAMIL recovered home.

Need to check the state of the tyres tomorrow, will not be happy if they are only fit for the bin as they are not the cheapest on the planet, but given the size of the flint and glass I picked out of them in the ride I very much doubt there are any bike tyres that could have survived the ordeal!

i don't understand why you'd ride race tyres in the pissing rain? They're flimsy and expensive and are for smooth clear roads (ideally dry) and it seems mad to condemn them to the bin which it sounds like you will after one ride when proper tyres for the crap conditions would be better?

I wouldn't usually but wanted to get out this evening - overrunning conf calls etc meant that I was about an hour behind where I planned on being, adding another 20 mins to the ride by swapping sets seemed like too much of a pain in the arse (at the time, with the foresight of hindsight and all that......)

Hopefully they won't be consigned to the bin but I won't know for sure until tomorrow - initial puncture on the front was not too bad but the second ones picked up after the broken glass I am not too sure about.

Only upside (although it is not much of one), is I paid less than the retail price of a single tyre for the pair of them on eBay....

Live and learn - it's not a crime if you don't do it twice!

120 not such an issue, but 160 would be horrific.

When the rain starts coming down before a race all you can hear in the car park is 'hissing' as people let 10-15 psi OUT of their tyres.

I was just about to make that point. If you always fit the tyres with the logo next to the valve or some other identifier you can then remove the tube, locate the hole and identify where on the tyre or rim the tube was damaged.

Because of the massive pressure gradient from road tyre to atmosphere, 120psi vs circa 14 psi, a road tyre naturally loses pressure very quickly. Every time you ride, check your pressures are up. Pinch flats due to low pressure are caused by bone idol people not checking the pressures before they ride, maybe not in your case, but this is sooooooo common. MAMIl tw*ts in my club always harping on about conti this michelin that, spending the most money on tyres bla bla bla. The cheap vredestein on the back of my bike has done 3000km now without a flat. Rant over

Better your bike than your car! I've recently had simialr issues with both an RX-8 and Audi A4 Tdi. Expensive business this tyre malarky!

I've got the London to Brighton Night ride fast approaching and am hoping for a hassle free run down there. I'm praying this hasn't jinxed me. Nothing more I can do that get inflation levels spot on, check the rims for debris... and pray!

Recently said goodbye to the Mazda. Surprisingly underwhelmed by the performance and combined with running costs I kissed her goodbye and joined the Audi TT brigade. Have not looked back since!

Damned punctures.

Did Red Trail at Swinley on Friday. Fine. On-road from/to Farnborough was fine too. As was the last 'short cut' section home across Hawley Woods (or at least it seemed fine). Didn't ride over the weekend, but I go into the garage this morning and a pancake-flat rear tyre is mocking me.

This is the second time now, in less than a hundred miles. First time it was a 'slow' puncture that I managed to limp home on by re-inflating three times in ten miles. This time I wasn't aware of any pressure loss either when riding it, or putting it away. WTF?

I know new tyres are going to be required soon, but there's good (dry weather) life left in these ones (Kenda Nevegal 26x2.1s). Recommend me a good off road tyre for mainly sandy heathland and hard packed dirt, with a bit of gravel towpath and tarmac thrown in between home and the 'fun' bits?
