Mansell 5 etc.
Mansell's connection with the red 5 is indeed as legendary as Gilles Villeneuve's connection with the number 27 Ferrari. However, Mansell's five wasn't always colored red. The first four races of 1985, both Williams cars carried white numbers. From a distance, the 5 and 6 looked quite alike, so it was decided to give the numbers different colors. Apparently BBC commentator Murray Walker made some remarks about this in his enthusiastic commentary, and thus the 'Red 5' name stuck.Carl Fogarty was particularly fond of the number 1 and carried it a lot.

Not a racer as such, but many different Nissans over the years wearing #23 due to it's Japanese pronunciation.

Two Three, not 23.

Ni san is two three
Number 23 is ni ju san or literally in english 2 10 3
In NASCAR I associate drivers by their numbers even by there predecessors.
Speaking of which is ESPN analyst and ex-basketball player. His number in basketball was 43 due to being a fan of 'King' Richard Petty.
