I had some similar thought a while back.
The main problem was/is that most 4x4s aren't all that good on road; well, not compared to a Porsche or MX5.

In the end I dropped 3.5k on a Wrangler TJ.
4l straight 6 engine sounds nice.
RWD when not in 4wd.
Plenty of scope for mods.

I hope to get it into a suspension specialist soon to get the tracking and alignment all sorted.
The basic model only has from tracking; but I'm optimistic there care ways to do the whole car.

This will be going on ebay next week.
Registered as a UVA fugitive in 1972 so stickly speaking doesnt even need indicators, tax exempt, classic car insurance that is only based on engine size so £150 per year regardless of modifications.

Disc brakes all round, servo assisted on back, bias adjuster and turning brakes fitted, converted to IRS rear suspension, camper van gearbox for better ratios with the big wheels, front beam widened and adjusters fitted and a deafening sound system.

The down side is these pictures are 6 years old. Fitted a lancia twin cam lump in it but never finished putting the radiator in. I then brought a house, got a demanding girlfriend, got a son, etc so it has sat in my garage unused for 6 years.

Looks nice! (6 years ago smile )

If you have a sensible price in mind that you want for it, PM me and we'll talk.

Otherwise can you please PM / email me the EBay link when you put it up.

I'm guessing that the Lancia lump having stood still for 6 years won't be that happy so it'll need another engine. (unless you took plugs out, squirted oil down the plug holes and turned it over a bit every month to keep the bores & piston crowns from rusting?)

Thanks Jim. Had a look at that but I'm after something a bit bigger. 2 seater at least, and preferably.

Powersliderides? Okay for a roadgoing toy, not up to the terrain the above suggestions will fly over though, but if it's a road toy that may be all you need.

As for finding second hand versions of the others AWDC/NORC/Marches4x4 websites for sale sections, however, many are pure competition use, so would need some work to get through an IVA.
http://www.allwheeldriveclub.org.uk/index.php/clas...

Most of those companies will just sell you a frame and/or bodywork+suspension to drop your own engines/drivetrain into though.

Or, save a lot of money and headache and buy an old french car on wafty suspension, because if you're worried about a few potholes then all the squeaks, rattles, whines and vibrations from most of these is going to really piss you off hehe

Yep, Power slide rides. I thought they wouldn't be that much off road as it's just a Beetle with a new shell that happens to look rather good.

And thinking about it you are right - if I get something for the purpose I have in mind, why not get one that can do that and a lot more offroad? There's a lovely grass track circuit near Northampton that I'm close too that I can have a lot of fun on smile

You could talk to the guys at offroad armoury
http://www.offroad-armory.com/store/index.php?rout...

They do custom tubular chassis things but not sure if they have ever done a road legal one..,,

Well I've looked and looked and can't find it.

It was about 10 years ago that I used to go to it, it was close to Northampton International Raceway.

Head north along the A428 towards Northampton, turn right onto one of those roads (Horton Road, Denton Road, one of them), carry on for about a mile then a right turn into a single track road along the edge of a field, then turn right onto grass for a while and you're there.

I can't find it anywhere on Google maps so it looks like it's been turned back into fields by the farmer frown

Closest one I can see now is the StNeots circuit

Are they eligible for UK events?
My son and I have been entering AWDC trials over the last few years, very nibble and fully road legal.

I also took part in the Tuareg Rally in Morocco in 2012.

Fantastic fun.

Cool. Quite like the arctic cat and Poalris RZR offerings.

I have seen these or very similar around Salisbury Plain area, look like a hoot so long as you keep it legal, can imagine a few horse riders getting upset though if come across them on the byways.

I've got one of these too biggrin
Just need to be sensible and switch off whilst the horse-riders go past, then fire up and shoot off again.

Seriously good fun!!
