if it runs fine on white then leave it there, if not try the green.

I did then have a MA Tornado chip in mine, but when I de-catted, the CO screw on the AFM did have an effect on the aural qualities (mark the original position before twiddling) - I kept it on the cat tune resistor

Had a lovely chat on the phone at the weekend with some geezer by the name of Adams. He seemed to know a thing or two about TVR ECUs, and he said that I could run the car on the white resistor setting if I kept the lambda sensors in, or on the green if I took them out.

Being a forward thinking kind of chap (occasionally), I bought a pair of manifolds off PH Classifieds that had been cut open, de-catted, and welded at the 4>1 unions, where they always go. So fully fit for purpose.

I will keep the old catted manifolds and Y piece and ask the tester if he wants them putting back on.

Thanks for your kind offer on another thread re the use of hoist - I have thought about it long and hard, but as I am changing both the manifolds and the Y piece I am going for the easy option and am getting my TVR guy to do the swap for me rather than cock it up myself...! Too many things that could go wrong if incompetent little me has a go, I have too much work on at the moment, and I am rather fond of my knuckles. If it was just the Y piece I might be doing it myself.

you only need to change over the y piece for the mot, the pre cats in the manifolds will not be required.

Thanks Clive - I have done, but by buying de-catted ones rather than having mine decatted.
Gives me the ability to completely revert to the standard exhaust set up if i want to.
I am presently still trying to get my new engine fuelling properly, so wanted to keep my options open.
I STILL want to hang it on the wall, not fit it in the car. It's a cracking piece of sculpture.

What's involved in getting rid of the pre-cats? Do they slip out or require a little more coaxing?
PS. Got mine on Tuesday and it looks rather nice, thanks again Clive

Out of interest why? To get the full benefit of decatting and reduce heat issues etc?

ok, your engine wants to breath as well as it can, so as well as getting the air in, with mods like smooth bore intake pipes, bigger butterfly in plenum, shorter trumpets etc etc, you also want to be able to get the air out as well, and you can do this by removing the precats in the manifolds, and the main cat as well if you so wish.

firstly by removing the precats you will gain approx 5 to 10bhp, and greatly reduce under bonnet temperatures, your car will quite happily pass an mot with no precats, but still with a main cat in place.

if you really want it to breath, then remove the main cat as well, providing you are happy with the extra volume of the exhaust noise.

to try and explain, say you have a slightly blocked kitchen sink and a blocked drain, the sink being the precats and the drain being the main cat, now, to make the water flow away quicker you unblock the drain outside, but don't do the sink, so is the water going to leave the sink any quicker??

It's a horrible job. Remove Y piece. Remove lambda sensors. Mask on, as the dust is toxic, then long screwdriver and hammer and hack them out. They are well fixed in place. Vacuum cleaner hose stuck up there to suck the dust out and pray none has got into the cylinders. Probably easier and safer to do it with the manifolds off the car. MIght be possible on the car, but take care not to use too much force.
Probably easier if you take them off the car, give them to a welder, get him to cut them open one inch from the 4>1 unions, at which point he can weld the inevitable holes at the 4>1 unions, hack out the cats and weld them up again. Welder will charge £50+ a side.
So it's no surprise that when I spotted a pair of de-catted manifolds on PH that had already been welded at the union, I had the owner's arm off......

Stuck the sculpture into the car today. Fitted nicely. Plus decatted the mafinolds. Awesome sound, deep and brutal with a hard edge, but noit at all irritating.
Car went faster than before, no question.
I had planned before and after rolling roads, but the before one was compromised by an unrelated issue, and the after one was cancelled to allow an hour's unexpected hammering time - one of the decatted manifolds I had bought was not suitable, so I had to decat one of the ones we took off.
However, I CAN report that the noise level has gone up - from 98 dB before to 99.5 dB after installing the Y piece. So still track day legal. YAY!!!!!
Thanks Clive, nice piece of work

Update - my silver sculpture is now a lovely gold colour. There is a lovely pop of unburnt fuel igniting inthe exhaust as I change up to second and third gears under heavy acceleration, and the glorious sound has grown and grown on me. I have fully decatted, but kept the standard exhaust.
