cam shaft labour costs
Discussion
I've currently got the top half of the engine apart and had the heads pressure tested and faces checked, all ok. I'm pretty sure the valve springs are singles but will check tonight. Ideally i would only like to replace the cam and lifters as the kids will be eating bread and dripping before long with the amount of money I am spending!

Most TVR heads are ready for this cam without work. I would need confirmation if the 400 has double valve springs. If so then its makes the job simpler. Not a big problem to remove the heads and sort them for new springs. Be an opportunity to do a little extra work and gain a few more bhp at the same time
Then a shim kit would be ok. Adjustable pushrods are an added expense that may not be necessary.

Hi Derek, I think you may have found your calling, you have the knowledge and experience, (more than some so called "specialists") And it would pay for more gas, clutches, tyres and several other bits and pieces.
It is within my capabilities but if anyone mention a certain pulley spacer they will get a bunch of 5's
At the moment any cash just goes towards next months bills. A cam swap a week could help keep me ticking over.... no pun intended.

I hope people do ask you to do some work for them, I know that it will be a quality service.

I have more than 1 car
Damn you, I was getting excited then

Being serious though, I could also use your expertise if you have the time. My clutch also needs doing, I've heard you can drop a 'box in 45 mins

As for the Cam, the Typhoon went straight in my standard 450. I was told that one of the other issues is if you have pocketed pistons as in the HC cars.

I can do your clutch in a day easy. Bring it over.

I run my Typhoon cam with non pocketed 4.0 pistons in my 4.6. No issues.
So do you think I can simply replace with the Typhoon along with new followers and all will be ok or do I need double valve springs etc?

Many thanks for the advice chaps, will get a cam and followers ordered! Anything else while i'm in there, some say the outer bearings ?

Peter said he ran his with sigle springs and it was fine.
Its not that big a cam and no need to rev much passed 6000 rpm so it shouldnt be a problem.

Duplex Timing gear will probably be worth it as well as the usual gaskets etc.
Depending what your future plans are, to save on labour charges, you could do the inlet manifolds and trumpets whilst the engine is 'open' as it were.
Thanks for the offer Derek but I don't think I have the funds at the moment, after all of my recent spending. I'll have a look on pay day though and be in touch, out of interest, is it something you can do when visiting the Somerset area or is it better done in your neck of the woods?

It would appear some do some don't on the non 400 HC models Derek

I'm also in Somerset so you could change my cam as well......could be a lucrative trip if you're this way?Depending what your future plans are, to save on labour charges, you could do the inlet manifolds and trumpets whilst the engine is 'open' as it were.

I do visit Somerset often. How would this work? Do you have a reasonable size garage and supply of coffee?
How far from Radstock are you guys?
We're both in Burnham on Sea, another 20mins or so from where we met last time, just outside of Wells. I can supply coffee, food and 2 standard size garages but no tools worth mentioning. Also a pair of useless but willing hands

As long as there is electric and light it could work.
A clutch could be fitted in a day.
A cam swap would take at least 2 or 3.
I have all the tools i need.
