Above average miles commute - what do you drive?
Discussion
56 mile round trip so less than many here, but a nice mix of flowing A and B roads, a quick hop down the M58 and a little bit of city grind at the end. Usually in the office by 7:30am to avoid the worst of the traffic both ways.
Lucky to have the choice between Octavia VRS, Saab 900 t16s and the Monaro at the moment.
Try to use the Octavia 3 days per week as it is the most economical, and if I go with the traffic flow and use hypermiling techniques I see an indicated 47mpg average quite frequently (about 43 actual).
The Saab and Monaro get driven more enthusiastically, but due to the largely flowing nature of my commute, I can still see 25mpg and 29mpg on a typical day.

oh.
Don't take "only affects XXX engine code" for gospel as the list can get longer if you google around.
eta: Have to say, I completely abhor autos and cruise and aircon and any form of comfort in cars, but after a year my right knee sometimes had a slight ache.
Yes, an auto would be a good idea in the long term too. The Fiat is a great wee thing. I took it as a trade in (i motor trade part time), it goes like a train and starts with half a turn of the key every morning. Wont win any beauty awards, but who cares?http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=112...

Had 170k miles under it's belt and felt like it would run forever.
I'm not going to make any friends with this... My commute is 80 miles, mostly done at between 90-120mph in a C63AMG.
Oh... It's from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and I have to fill up every day and a half. For GBP 18. As I said... not going to make any friends with that, but you did ask the question!

Currently have an 02 120K Fiat Marea JTD thats superbly reliable and averaging 44mpg.
Glad you're pleased with the Marea. You're normally one of the loudest "Boohoo all modern diesels are rubbish, the injectors/EGR/DMF is GUARANTEED to break blah blah blah" contributors on anti-diesel threads, so hopefully this car will change your mind. The 1.9 JTD is the same common rail engine used in mid-noughties Vauxhalls, right?DannyT said:

My commute here in Dubai is about 3 miles each way, before I came here I was commuting 138 miles each way in a variety of cars, best of which was 80k or so in a WRX.... almost all B roads as well!

Besides if there is a 'major' failure, i can only 'lose' the price i paid for the car minus the £200 scrap value i'd get for it, so not going to be a big hill of beans

Not so cheap to do that in an 07 vectra with a rattly DMF and the DPF anti pollution light on.
Used a Astra Sporthatch 1.7cdti when I commuted from Orpington to Reading/Kingston daily.
I used to average 55mpg at 80ish (OBC) but if taking it easy could get it to 60mpg ish. It was perfect for the job until it imploded at 90k miles after 3 years of ownership, at 4 years old so I part-exed it.

Surely that would be pretty much the perfect car for a long commute?

Not terribly economical - averaging early 30's. I may use it a bit until its sold, but i dont want to tie up cash from my part time business into my daily commuter.

Oh right. Worth trying though I think as the 530d will be significantly better than the Fiat for NVH. When you spend 2hrs upwards a day in the car it makes a difference IMO. Hot start problem which wouldn't be cured with sensor changes - £unknown
Injector replacment all around - £££££
Cambelt due within 4 months - ££££
Brakes due all-round (rear was origional and still on original front disc's) - £300
So decided to cut my losses, use man maths, and trade it in when driving from cold againt my old 335i, cutting £1k in the private/Part-ex value.

Just cant justify what would be effectively taking the cash 'out' of my business to use that.

Only problem with such threads is that you only ever hear/read of the problems, there's not many people start off threads on forums or conversations where the topic is titled "well, I went to work today and the car didn't break down again". Just think of how small that percentage of cars in that thread is compared to when has actually been produced (millions).
But in the automotive industry we measure failures in parts per million and anything over 0 is considered a f**k up and anything over 3 is considered a serious f**k up, particularly if it results in bent rods and holes through the block. On the subject of automatics that's not necessary for a well timed motorway commute. You'll have the odd day where there's an accident or it rains a little bit and everything grinds to a halt but it's the right leg that gets the strain from constantly modulating and/or holding in one place the accelerator, that's where CC comes in handy.
I think the Marea has a certain weird European charm to it

If you want something that's manual but has CC and aircon and auto lights and other niceties on a budget get an old top-trim Clio, called the 172 or 182

I do a 184 mile round commute , 95% of which is motorways, in a clio 182, fortunately only once or twice a week. I wouldn't recommend it mainly because the seats are awful, otherwise i think it's ok, i get 40-42mpg and been very reliable over the last 40k miles - although i think most cars would be with this sort of commute.

Looking to change it now as i have arthritis in me back, which doesn't mix well with the uncomfortable seats!

I would be a bit afraid of it though, in terms of big bills. Plus as i said, i cant really justify the outlay out of the business for it.
