I don't think the number of cylinders matters; it's all about layout and orientation.

No inline engine should ever have exhaust tips on both sides of the car. An inline engine should have them on the exhaust valve side of the head only;

I always thought the quad pipes on six-pot BMW M-cars were the epitome of tackiness.

Has it ever occured to you, that the quad pipes on BMWs often are necessitated by the need to route the system via the rear suspension?
Nice idea, but...

Before BMW M went all quad-pipey:

Although my Z4 MC is slightly confused...

Of course it can go the other way.....

I do like the burble of a flat four, the stock exhaust on my forester turbo possibly isn't loud enough, and even this picture doesn't quite illustrate quite what I'm getting at. I'm talking about those scoobies with dustbins for silencers, the kind of car that slipped into shed territory before being scooped up by barry and his mates so they can boost the tits off it. Too loud, too noisey, your spoiling it for everyone else. More importantly, you look like a dick doing it.
+1

This is a massive gripe of mine. The size of the exhausts fitted to some subarus nowadays is hilarious and completely ruins the car for me.

I was literally thinking of this the other day, I was driving behind a new A6 TDi with twin exit exhausts and I I thought "that shouldn't be on that car!", IMO they should only be on special cars.

What about the Ka Sport with a reversing light masquerading as a central exhaust pipe?! judge

"Noise should be consistent across the rev range and not artificially augmented; contrived start-up blips with the system fully open before closing the valves and settling down to a quiet idle are especially objectionable (see Porsche, Ferrari, etc).

"Pops, bangs and crackles should only occur 'naturally' and not due to contrived ECU controlled 'misfires'. Ditto flames."

All so true!!

Appalling breach of cylinder count / exhaust tips rules;

Really? Wasn't there a function related reason for this? I think it suits the car, I also think the Motorsport pedigree means it's earned the right to break the rules and be a bit arrogant.

No?

I never liked the twin pipes you get on the S2000 as it was like the engine was punching above its weight so I changed it;-

Mine is on the right:-

I think it looks much better with the single pipe.

I love the twin silencer system on an original BMW 323i and went out of my way to convert the 316 I used to re shell it. I had to cut out and replace the rear offside chassis rail, to do a factory fit conversion. It was a lot of effort and avoidable expense, but it's a styling cue that helps make the 323i special. (to me anyway) It does have 6 cylinders and 300bhp though, so warrants the extra pipe.

I was very pleased with the result, both visual and better still the sound and can certainly recommend them, I hope it passes the test for a mid mounted V8 i.e. two into four:

This is so bad ass.

Dunno, I just picked an iconic car which breaks "the rules".

It reminds me of an MX5 without the other pipe.

They look like the 'Heated Towel Rails' you see added to chavved up 4x4s and why they put motorbike silencers on the Tuscan I could never understand, the Griffiths pipes were cool though.

Only space for the silencers and forms an important styling detail. Coupled with the fact that they're a genuine 2 pipe system with 2 3-into-1 manifolds to optimize exhaust scavenging.

PH has a point on excess exhaustage, but rules being proposed whilst only for fun do show a lack of technical grounding for an enthusiast website.

Another point, F40 has an exhaust for each cylinder bank, ie 2 only. The third center pipe is not an exhaust, rather the wastegate vent pipe. Consequently 458 triple exhausts are a completely naff styling exercise as there is no reason for the third pipe. smile

I quite like the symmetrical look on my Accord. They only come with 3 engines.....derv has no exhaust, 2.0 has one and the 2.4 has two.

Surprised no-one has mentioned the first XF....dunno if it's me but I really think the tailpipes on these always look wonky and a bit of an afterthought.....and they are clearly fake.

My favourite..

The F20 does punch above it's weight, it's an impressive engine.
