That article also says in 2008 in a sample of just over 1000 the failure rate was 1 in 6 (16% ish) that is re-iterated in the den of geek article higher up, but they may have got the figures from the same wiki judging by the language used .

54% is unlikely I think. Citation needed.

You will just have less bells and whistles turned on (i.e. lower draw distances, AA, MSAA, SS etc) but the code will be the same.
I'm not sure that is true, IF there are significant disparities in power between the two, AND we see a developer wanting to eke out every last drop of potential from each one.

Many will use the same code and vary shader complexity and so on, but in practice you develop exactly for your platform for best performance.

Whether developers will see any value in doing so is another thing and will come down to their testing I would guess.

Ie, One might be slower than the 4 in one way, but faster in another way, so you might see some task done completely differently on one vs the other.

Look up table vs procedural generation might be a balance we see different between these two if indeed the PS4 has better RAM and more storage for data, it may just store pre-made assets vs the One which may have potential higher performance for procedural generation at frame-prep for example.

We don't see this for PC's simply because there are so many (infinite) combinations, but that doesn't mean you might not see optimisations when the systems are a fixed hardware config and the optimisation cost becomes increasingly worthwhile.

I had my release day 360 for a good 4 years with no problems before it red ringed.

It did it on the day GTA4 came out so I headed straight out and bought an Elite (which has had no problems to this day).

Then got the original 360 repaired for £75 and gave it my Dad. That then died again about a year later. Its somewhere in the garage now.

Various people saying that the talk of dropping DRM is fake. Suppose we will have to wait and see.

It's real. No connection needed. Sharing games as we do now.

Wow.

I really didn't think they'd do that. Blown it wide open again.

Yep. I think they had to though. The backlash was astounding.

It's still £80 more expensive though. Not that I care I'm firmly back in the Xbox camp biggrin

I'm surprised they backtracked so soon. had been hoping they would do it at some point.

quite interested to see how much the XBO catches up with pre orders over the weekend after this announcement.

Hardly any in my opinion, the damage has been done, everyone I know who was getting a next gen console has gone and pre-ordered a PS4(including myself).

Ignoring the above though, they are still lacking in specs, more expensive and have that stupid Kinect that you can't unplug, everything to do with something online is still behind the pay-wall.

I desperately wanted the Xbox One to be great, sadly, it lacks in every area when competing against the PS4.

Given that there are rumours all over the internet that MS can't supply enough stock compared to Sony due to possibly having issues in manufacturing, I'd say it's unlikely.

Yes and No, but mostly Yes, they're dropping the free online service and insisting everyone uses PS+ so you get discounted and free content and games. I say discounted, with everyone on PS+ it's no longer as discounted price, just 'the price', but I'm splitting hairs.

Now, this is far from terrible news. PlayStation Plus gives you access to a ton of free games (so long as you're a paid-up member), and competitors Microsoft have always charged for online play, something they'll continue to do with the Xbox One.

Still, the fact that online multiplayer was free on the PS3 will likely rankle a few.

Wow, I'm really jealous, how did you get hold of an Xbox One and PS4 so early? Where did you find the XBox lagged behind the PS4?

Bit of a statement to make that PSN will suddenly be better online than Xbox Live as it is miles behind at the moment?
