Strange underbonnet noise?
Discussion
Yes, extremely chuffed with myself, apart from the brown trousers moment as I read Qbee's post about the tension
Also a bit annoyed at myself, I couldn't hold the pulley still to undo the bolts and managed to put a slight dent in my swirlpot
Any handy tips on re doing the bolts and holding the pulley in place? Very tight, super tight or are they torqued?
Did you see my other post about a alternative to the budget bearing?
Nick
Edit to add: Just seen your post about the bearing. Did you research a better one? I notice the website you mentioned had the same budget bearing but metal sealed and it's cheaper.

Well done - I bet you feel quite chuffed with yourself now?
Does that bearing feel "grindy"?
You're doing better than I did - I kept putting mine off till it seized solid with a girl in the car that I was trying to cop off with which p*ssed her off enough that she's never spoken to me again - oh and when it siezed it also gouged two bloody great lumps out of my swirl pot!
...of and with the spring loaded tensioner you can't set the tension wrongly. So don't worry about getting that right.
I didn't know it was spring loaded sorry. I was remembering back to my Mini fan belt days.... Now where did I leave my slippers and the Werthers?Does that bearing feel "grindy"?

All those bearings are running well within their specs so there is no *NEED* to get something high end ... it's just my own tendancies to buy something cheaper to try the theory and then immediately want to replace it (even if it's working and fine) with something more expensive .
If I was doing it again I'd probably use a metal sealed bearing rather than rubber seal because my head tells me it's going to be more heat resistant but that bearing doesn't get that much heat pumped into it so it's not needed ... mine is holding up perfectly.

The mind boggles.........
Oi! That's not very nice
Think of the untold damage I could do if I refit it wrong. My previous experience of underbonnnet spannering is limited to oil/lead/plug changes and getting my finger mullered by my ex father in law whilst holding a socket in place while he put his full weight on it

Nick, I have 2 spare idler pully assemblies here............................
That's very kind Peter, perhaps a road trip is in order
You got another meeting of the TVR worlds finest happening at your manor again?
I must sort out a TVR barbecue, I'll give it some thought!

I'll give them a bell tomorrow get one ordered. What about the reassembly, any tips on keeping the pulley still and how tight do I go?
Pop the pulley onto the flange and put in the bolts, tighten finger tight, put the belt on and the belt will hold the pulley while you tighten them up fully - didn't torque them, just nip 'em up tight with a 1/4" ratchet.

Nick, if you fail with the bearing renewal don't forget I have a couple of tensioners here.
As to undoing pulley bolts, I usually use a flat lever across the remaining bolts, loosen one at a time and leave them in place so you can use them as purchase when loosening the others, POP, (piece of piss!).

Hi Peter, I was only suggesting that another day could be held similar to the one you held, I hope you don't think that I pressured you into it.
But a BBQ sounds great
I think we should all bring contributions to the Feast, and agree beforehand who is bringing what so that we don't end up with 400 sausages of dubious originBut a BBQ sounds great

Cheers Peter, I'll keep this thread up and running with any progress. At the moment I have the housing off the car and everything taken apart. Ordered the new bearing but still trying to source a new nut for the end. It has a nylon locking bit on the end so i thought it best to get a new one.Nick, if you fail with the bearing renewal don't forget I have a couple of tensioners here.

I do have a girlfriend these days though, so as soon as they are handed back to me i suppose I'll be handing them straight to the new lady anyway
On a serious note though, I thought if there was the nylon locking bit then you should renew rather than re use?
