20 - 25k for an S5

I've driven the S5 V6 as a courtesy car and it was that drive that convinced me to get an S model. But it also convinced me to get a manual gearbox as the auto did things I couldn't get my head around.

For instance, I'd be accelerating with not quite wide open throttle, I'd go to make an overtake while at about 5k rpm, use full throttle thinking it would just give me the remaining 2k rpm at a quicker rate, but instead it dropped a gear, went straight into the red line and then changed back to the gear I was originally in, leading to me losing power for a short period of time before doing what it should have done in the first place. It happened more than once making me think it was a trait of the box. When I dropped the car back to Audi and told them about it, they said that it will always drop a gear when you do a kick down. To me that is just plain stupid if there aren't any available revs left in the lower gear.

Then there was the pull away from standstill. Great fun if there was nothing in front of you and you could floor it, but pulling away slowly in traffic was hard. I just couldn't find that sweet spot of pressure between no power and lurching off, regardless of the comfort or dynamic setting. This was on a 2012 model with about 5k miles on the clock.

I have a E92 M3 & it's a cracking allrounder but I love the S5 too it has a superior interior & a nicer sounding V8 aswell either motor will put a smile on your face.

1000% disagree
What do you disagree with? the M3's interior is bland compared to the S5 imo & the V8 in the M3 is muted whereas the V8 In the Audi has a nicer tone, the M3 is the complete package though & more fun to drive but I wouldn't say no to a S5.

I've got the new V6T S5 and its a good all rounder. It's fairly quick but not blistering, it doesn't sound great, far too quiet, although the waste gate on the turbo when you change up under hard accleration always brings a wry smile to my face.

Cockpit is a nice place to be but as previously mentioned spec is poor for a near top of the range model, no sat nav for example.

First service due at18k miles which is amazing after running an Aston with expensive services every 6k.

For the money (second hand) they look like a bargain to me.

M3 is the better car but I prefer the look of the S5

It doesn't really compete with the M3 though as its pitched a tier below against the likes of the 335i. RS5 is the M3 rival.

I'd be looking at the Lexus IS-F instead. Much more rare, much better equipped from the factory smile

That's a nice good rare alternative, you don't see many about.

1000% disagree
Which bit do you 1000% disagree with?
Damn one zero too much.

I disagree with it all, the interior looks as if a bomb has gone off and buttons have landed all over the dash, and I'm not a fan of the styling inside either. Superior build quality, questionable.

The V8 IMO doesn't sound better either

I agree that either will make you smile, but the M3 will provide a bigger smile IMO

I bought one recently, having had 3 996"s before hand it's in a different league in terms of looks and refinement. It's fairly quick when driven hard but its hardly fun, if your looking to spend 20-25k I'd be looking at other cars, if you can get one (V8) for mid to high teens, it's fantastic value for money. The difference in price I paid buying privately for the same age/spec/mileage as an Audi approved car was 8.5k!

it is!

no wastegates in sight....

and i like the S5, have a v8 one, and whilst it's not the panacea of handling, its by no means bad.

it's probably one of the nicest GT cars out there

Wow. At 22mpg that's 10,000 gallons. Average price a gallon over the last 5 years is probably £5.50 giving around £55,000 of fuel. Eye watering.

S5 are great. Before I bought mine it was a decision between that and an M3. In the end I just felt the '3 was trying too hard and a little too "max power"

As people have said before, it has all the ingredients to be a great GT car but the big V8 is very thirsty by modern standards and the fuel tank is too small. Range is a lowly 300/320 miles of gentle (70/80) motorway speeds. It will not cross continents quickly as you'll spend too much time in the petrol station.

Spec is king. Nav & sound are essential. I'm constantly amazed at how many poorly spec'd cars there are out there.

S5 = Nice engine(s) in a somewhat bland car, good in a straight line and on the motorway but not much in the way of driving pleasure overall. Very non-PH view here.. but I'd almost rather have a diseasal version, the S5 isn't worth the poor MPG in my view.

M3 = The complete package and great fun.
yes

I stand corrected!! Whatever the noise (reminds me of the waste gate in my old MR2 Turbo only much much quieter) it sounds nice

I'd be interested to learn what that noise is then please??
