My harddrive is a Freecom XXS, and works without additional power in both my Aston as well as my Audi!
Excellent, thanks for the tip! Purchased a 500GB Freecom XXS from Amazon, put a few tunes on it (deleted the files it came with), plugged it in to the car and it worked. There's a 1TB version also available.woolders said:
Here is a really naive question from a complete technophobe. Assuming you have managed to download 4000 songs onto one of these gadgets, how do you find the song you are looking for?
In USB mode if you press the joystick in it takes you to the folders on the stick displayed in alphabetical order. You can then scroll up and down via the joystick to the folder you want. Press the joystick in again and you will see the list of songs contained in that folder. Scroll to the song you want and pres the joystick in again to select it.Turn it up and enjoy
.Edited to add that when transferring music to a USB stick from a computer, it's best to arrange them in folders (say album name) to make the songs easier to find, rather than just dump them all on the stick.
Thanks for the answer on the USB HDD. I bought one and am having trouble seeing iTunes purchases on the HDD when plugged into the car. I can see them on a laptop and play them in iTunes or Windows Media as well.
Is there a legit. work around to play them on the HDD in the car or am I just being a dim technophope and the answer is a simple click of a mouse?
Can anyone help - it is driving me mad.

Ah a non-tech answer for what is a tech problem......... Here goes.....
When you put tunes onto your ipod and plug this into your car, the ipod/iphone converts the file into audio output and the input to your sound system sees only audio, so the ipod/iphone has converted the file. By downloading itunes files (possibly AAC or M4P if encoded or M4A if un-encoded) the USB interface needs to be able to read that file type. Therefore you may need to convert your files to MP3 or WMA filetype that the Aston sound system can play. Regardless of the fact that Windows player can play it because it does have the ability to convert itunes files into playable audio. Is that non-tech enough? Basically the file type you have downloaded is not compatible with the USB interface. Convert your files into one that is.
I am sure someone will answer with phrases like CODEC, but from the Aston Martin site: USB Connector with Waveform Audio Format (WAF), Windows Media Audio (WMA) and MPEG (MP3) audio file compatibility.
Hope that helps and if not email me and I will point you in the right direction

Ok, not sure what else is happening but first are you sure you have selected USB from the menu button, and the light for the sat nav button is NOT lit.Someone said that you use the joystick, all that does on my car is to open the sat nav screen and scrol through the menus of it.

If those conditions are present and you press the joystick it should go into the USB stick and show the various folders. If it does not, then there is a fault.
Assuming there are no faults on your system, a USB stick with songs contained in folders should play each song in sequence. If it does not then it is likely that unplayed songs are the wrong format. IIRC it reads MP3 files but not WMA files.
If you set up your USB stick on a PC, arrange the music in folders down to one level, ie avoid folders within folders.
So, hardware and software faults aside, use MP3 in single layer folders. If it still doesn't work then try another make USB stick because the Aston is a little sensitive. They build in "character" and quirkiness to enrich your ownership experience. Keep telling yourself that!
Thanks for the reply, i shouild add that this is not a factory fitted system it's a denison unit, if i go into the audio menu it does not give me the option of usb mode.
Now there are little switches on the side of the unit for various car configurations and as this a volvo unit maybe the settings need to be set to the other type as volvo have 2 settings depending on the car and type of unit fitted.
It's peeing down now so i'll give it a try whenits dry and let you know what happens.

+1Simon, I appreciate it is not a factory unit but the toggle will be monopolised by the selected function - in this case the satnav. If you press 'mode' if you have that button, then it will display all the relevant musical modules available.
Good luck

Finaly got round to try the other setting on the unit and it now works and plays all the albums one after another, also the scan button works but as Jockman said about the mode button if i've got one nope not got one so i have to scrol through until i find the ablum i want.
I will send a email to the makers and see what they say.
Thanks for all your input guys Simon.

I purchased a new Sandisk Cruzer Blade 16gb but found it extremely unreliable in my 2010 Vantage. I found this thread and purchased a 16GB Super Talent Pico-C from Amazon (about a tenner) and it works 100% perfectly!
Well seen as this thread has been resurrected I may as well add that I have since upgraded to a 32Gb Super Talent Pico-C and it also works fine.
This is a bit of an old thread, but I'm having trouble selecting the folders on my usb stick (as seems did a few others previously).
It was suggested that you can use the joystick to select folders on the usb, but when I press the joystick it just fires up the sat nav, even though I am in usb mode.
Any suggestions??
Thanks

When you say USB mode - I'm pretty sure if the NAV light is illuminated then the joystick will control that. Press mode (or I think from memory just pushing the Nav button to deselect it) will assign the joystick to the audioIt was suggested that you can use the joystick to select folders on the usb, but when I press the joystick it just fires up the sat nav, even though I am in usb mode.

This was mentioned a few posts ago on the thread - if the sat nav fires up when you press the joystick, it's because the nav is selected from the little buttons and presumably a light will be in adjacent to the nav button. If that's the case simply press the nav button and it will go off, then you can play with your USB stick It was suggested that you can use the joystick to select folders on the usb, but when I press the joystick it just fires up the sat nav, even though I am in usb mode.

Problem is I don't have a nav button.... is that button only on the Premium Audio, or only on models after a certain date?
I have found a way that looks like it can access the folders on the stick, but once you get past the first layer it seems to stop working. It's not the end of the world as never used a USB stick in a car before.....
