Looking at it, you *might* be OK with that FD and a compact, but as already pointed out it's sitting pretty low on the braze-on already. If you find a cheap square taper crankset it's maybe worth a go - 50/36, perhaps?

I wouldn't go with a triple, you'd need a new RD, FD, and to lengthen the chain. Too much work.

The smallest small chainring that your bolt pattern will support is a 38 tooth. That and a cassette with a 28 sprocket also might be OK.

Now, I have just done the compact conversion on my Olmo - Campagnolo 52-39 to FSA Tempo 50-34, it (fortunately) works 100% OK. The FD is sitting very slightly higher relative to the front chainring teeth than it should, but it still works beautifully. I can post a picture if you're interested.

A pic would be good please. In the workshop I have found a FSA Vero triple that will fit an octalink bb, plus an Ultegra triple FD, and a few different new Shimano and SRAM chains in sizes from 7 to 10. I'm tempted to try the triple anyway given the kit is there.
Would I definitely need to change the RD, or is it possible to use the small chainring only with the say 19-25 on the back purely for big climbs?

I think it should be fine. As you say, you may need to keep it in the larger sprockets on the back depending on exactly where the RD runs out of capacity.

Beautiful Build - love that paintwork and set-up.

If you need an easy cog set maybe try the Athena 11! I am attaching the links to the frame respray I mentioned and the library is here so you can see how this new GS actually looks quite period:

A few weeks on, the Master is still a joy to ride. I've finished the workshop clean up and started on the other bikes/ parts too. Next is deciding what is to keep, and what to sell.

I’ve wiped off the dust from the Cinelli Pista, and Austro-Daimler Super Leight frames, taken them outside, and now have some decent photos of them. I thought a few on here might be interested to have a look given the age of them and condition smile

The AD is 54 C-T, and top tube 57 1/2 C-C

The Cinelli is 55 1/2 C-T, and top tube 55 1/2 C-C.

That is assuming I've measured properly!

Condolences on the loss of your F-I-L, but he had good taste in cycles.

Assuming you have enough parts, I'd just keep building them up. Patina is good, as long as it's not from neglect, but from use.

The above two frames I believe will be worth quite a sizeable amount of money to a collector. I may not have all the original parts for a period correct track Cinelli, nor would it get the use by me or anyone else in the family. Better selling it to someone who will really appreciate it.

On the rebuild/ use front...

The Rabobank Colnago is obviously done
The second Master Olympic is nearly rebuilt too.
The Raleigh Burner Styler is going to be restored to use as a retro cool BMX next.
The Colnago Super and Flying Scot fate is still undecided yet.

I'm yet to find out anything about this Sunn. Anyone know anything about them? The frame appears smallish (I'm 5'11), but with the seat up to the limit line, it rides well, is nice and light, and has road suitable tyres on it. I 'think' I'll be using it as a winter/ family ride bike.

There's a Colnago Master Olympic for sale in one of my local bike shops, fitted with Campag bits including the wheels, and lever mount as opposed to top tube shifters. It looks lovely, but probably not worth the 2.5k SFr they're asking for it (to me at least)

Just a new Master frame and fork are around £2.5k at the moment.

The Master Olympic was only built for a few years due to issues over the Olympic brand, I think only 95/96.

If it's in great condition or NOS and has decent Campag stuff on it then £2.5k is probably not far off the mark.

Ropey second hand Master frames on their own are £600-900 at present.

They are also a joy to ride, here's my Master Olympic which has just been built up:

Don't tell me that! 2.5k Swiss is about £1,650, I think they have a couple of them actually, and I do quite fancy an old steel road bike...

I will try and get some pics of it later, and report back. Thinking about it they might even have two of them in there.

Didn't notice the SFr!

Definitely worth that sort of money if it's in good condition and nicely specced.

What colours was it?

I think it's the same as the bluey white one on page one of this thread, will go and take a proper look later and report back. I'm dangerously close to S-1 at the moment, a situation which may only be rectified with the purchase of a Pashley so it could be an expensive spot...

Can we see the blue Olympic Master built up next? It's a Colnago so it should be built with Campag, those "Sherriff star" Campag hubs on the Wolber rims would make a great start, those hubs a worth a few quid by the way. Great thread, loved seeing what you did with the Rabobank team bike. Here's a cheeky little number I builtup recently.

So they have two of them, Colnago Master Olympic with triple chainset, Campag Chorus bits, Campag wheels and look to be in very good condition. Both are the same colourscheme, pics below:

Look to be in decent condition and fitted with period equipment.

Looks like Chorus 8 spd and period correct for the frame, triple is quite unusual too but will give some relief to what is probably a 21 or 23t on the rear cassette!

The Rigida rims were fairly cheap, but if they are on Campag hubs they should roll nicely.

Probably a bit rich at ~£1600 though with that spec.

Yeah, was thinking that having looked around a bit, a frame can be had for £500 on eBay so it does seem a bit rich. They do look lovely though!

Three years later, I'm now the owner of this...

It popped up for sale on a local Facebook selling group and is the right size so it seemed rude not to really.

It has a Campag Record front mech, Chorus for everything else, 8 speed with a big old chainset on the front. The hubs are Campag too but the rims look to be unbranded. I've no idea how original it is, the stem has been swapped but I have the original, the seat Post is a Ritchey one so that must have been changed. It's a lovely thing, I'm looking forward to the commute tomorrow already!

Nice, AD10 (paint code) always looks good.

My Master is currently hanging on the wall with a snapped seat stay frown
