They are lovely compact little rabbits, this picture shows a adult black.
And yes they should look like they have run into the back of a bus wink

the issue we're having at the moment is trying to pick him up. When he's in his cage he's happy to let you stroke him but when you try and pick him up he runs off.

Also found that as he's getting used to our smells he won't go near our hands. He smells them and then runs off? Any idea why this is?

Rabbits generally don't like their feet being off solid ground, my two hated being picked up.

Agree with that, although Micky is now resigned to being picked up to remove his poo as he's getting very old now and doesn't move around much, so that his poo sticks to him. And before anybody pipes up, we do clean him and check for fly-strike regularly and there are three fly killers and a can of fly-spray in his room of about 8 ft square as I share it with him now.

None of the other rabbits we've had liked being picked up, although some would come for a tickle, as long as they could stay with their feet on the floor, they were in seventh heaven.

Possibly hand fed food and treats. Sniffs for treats and then when nothing runs off as outprs does, doesn't run far but a couple of feet away. Also depends on what youve been doing. I chopped onions the other day and then went out to see the rabbit put my hand out and she bolted like hell lol.

Like smelling feet to.

Our last rabbit loved being picked up and held like a baby, they all seem to have different personalities, she liked to dig as well, a 3 metre tunnel worthy of the Great Escape, given away when next doors patio began to to collapse.

Fly strike can be a problem if you don't use the proper preventative medication, it is a hideous affliction, you would not wish it on your worst enemy, you must be ever vigilant in hot weather.

Rabbits are awesome.

Charlie looks like one of mine called sweep. They do indeed have their own personalities. Sweep is unbelievably friendly and Soo is angry lol. But she can be sweet too.

In general they don't like being picked up as their instinct is to fight, being picked up means they'll be some birds lunch! Although handling a lot from young van make them enjoy it/tolerate it.

dont pick them up - get down to bunny level and let it come to you, that will gain its trust a lot more

Also look at getting him fixed as it should help keep him calm

Oh and get him a wifey bun from a rescue after he has been fixed, rabbits are happier in a pair
