I once challenged a chap helping himself to building materials from my neighbours garden on a Saturday morning
After being told to mind my own business* I phoned the police

Police asked if he had permission from neighbour to remove stuff
I suspected not but as she was camping in Snowdonia with duff mobile signal I couldnt contact her
Police said unable to act as she may have sanctioned him moving stuff

An hour later he returned with a trailer and helped himself to even more stuff
I again challenged him and was told to mind my own business*
Once again I phoned the police and gave a detailed description, took photos and furnished his car's details and reg
Police again unable to act as he may have been acting with her consent

Neighbour returns on Sunday night
Quick chat reveals chap did not have consent to remove stuff
On Monday builder estimates at least £2,000 worth of materials has vanished from site
Neighbour phones police

Police visit chap living at address car registered to that I supplied
Police agree description and photos match same chap

Unfortunately no sign of 2k's worth of gear at chaps house
No case to answer

End of

I despair - whats the point of the police then?

Assuming they have all the evidence surely they're neglecting their duty or something. I would make it clear that it is unacceptable and after already doing half of their job for them I would continue to peruse my own inquiries.

That said you also now know his MO - I fell asleep in the back of my van with all my "work tools" around me only to be woken by a crazed drug addict try to break in. Job jobbed...

...This may be bollicks though. In all seriousness I hope this works out for you and the police are just disorganised. How they can claim a lack of evidence after you've done their work and got corroborating witness statements, pictures etc is shocking. A kick up the arse is obviously required - maybe write to your mp

Advise the police you've passed the perps details onto some 3.142keys who offered to deal with the problem free of charge.

Having had to put up with simnilar police incompetence I won't be calling them up in any hurry in the future.

Alternatively, neighbour returns from camping trip to discover that her father/brother/mate doing her a favour has been locked up all weekend. I'm sure they'd see the funny side when you explained your suspicions to them and nothing more would be said. One of the joys of Policing is knowing that every decision you make can and will be forensically examined and critiqued, usually with the benefit of significantly more relevant information than was available when the decision was actually made. Of course, as theft is a hybrid offence you could always have used the 'any person' power of arrest granted by PACE to detain the miscreant yourself!

There is a certain member on SPL who cant help but have a dig at anyone who posts anything less than a glowing tribute of the police.

This person claims to be a policeman but doesnt seem to have the temperment and maturity required to effectively carry out the duties of a policeman.

Lets hope he is just a walter mitty type character.

There is also one on SP&L who has absolutely no knowledge on the topic. They throw words like CRO, S.18 and PACE around, but in reality have very little idea what they actually mean.
They are so misguided and yet feel qualified to dish out horrendously bad advice.
Their lack of knowledge and understanding is so bad that I genuinely feel a little sorry for them, for they try so hard. But in truth his lack of sense of reality and the belief that the world owes him a favour means people are inclined to treat him like a juvenile. This can subsequently be misinterpreted by him as immaturity. But hey....it takes all sorts.

As this scrote appears to think he can do what he likes in his 'patch', he's a prime candiddate for a sting. One scrappy van needed, parked up with tempting (fake) goodies. How about an exploding brief case full of bright violet dye? Or a VERY BIG BAD TEMPERED dog inside. Or a man trap. Just use your imagination.

By contrast, there's another member who absolutely will not hear anything positive posted about the Police so keeps re-posting his story of an awkward tenant come street thug who viciously knocked on his window and then drove off.

Whilst I sympathise that you may not have had the best experience with the Police, your constant need to keep posting anti-police comments in every thread possible is getting tiresome. I've had both terrible and great experiences with the Police but you don't hear me bleating on about any of them on here.

That's bks though and you know it. It would be very easy for said relative to prove their connection to the victim, if they were genuine.

Whilst I may have been lucky when I called to say we have burglars downstairs in the house three car loads of police officers attended in less than 5 minutes!

Thank you for all the helpful replies, I am calming down a bit now, I'd only just received the email before I posted.
In the last 12 months I have had three vans stolen and another written off by a hit and run, this stuff begins to stack up. It's that feeling - possibly misplaced - that the harder you try to do the right thing the easier it is for some scumbag to ruin it with seeming impunity.

In my ire I neglected to consider that the fresh info may not have gotten through, I'll pass that on via email.

At 50 years old I am far too slow to think of a dish best served cold but I have to say that I have quite a few young, strong and fiery guys working for me who don't live far from this area, I couldn't be absolutely sure that certain paths won't cross.
Please do everyone a favour and continue to update the thread, and in particular, please detail the official responses you receive.

Will do 9mm. I'm going into hospital tomorrow for a couple of procedures so may be quiet for a few days but I'll get back with updates as soon as I can.

No luck, burglaries in progress be graded as an immediate response, which means resources will be dispatched as soon as is possible.

Now I wonder if someone has a "friend" who coincidentally didn't have that experience.

Unfortunately the CCTV doesnt show anything apart from a man buying something in a shop. Even if it could be proven it was your card that he spent, he would claim he found it on the floor.
Ahh, the old "I found someone else's card and used it" defence rolleyes

Do you actually think you know what you're talking about, or just don't care about providing bad advice?
Indeed. It's called theft by finding.

Replied to the "Case Closed" email with info about the cctv, no reply so far but Adam had a couple of calls. First was from a lady asking him questions but still saying case is closed, a few hours later a second call from a PC who now has the full facts and is going to visit the shop to take a look at the footage. This is a step in the right direction, very pleased they are following up.

Keep up the pressure and good luck.

The one time I was impressed with police response times was when a group of us playing football in a park where confronted by a knifeman. It was one against over 20 of us so they managed to chase the knifeman away and detained his accomplice who passed him the knife (I was by this time hiding in my car). The police were there in about 3 - 5 minutes. The response was unbeliveably quick I suspect people from the surrounding houses may have made a call earlier than we did.

As usual I was/we were disappointed as the police let him go despite witness statements from several people.

Still, his one "positive experience" miraculously managed to morph into a negative experience by the end.

Also surprised that he was privy to the final outcome despite having no part in the investigation due to bravely hiding whilst the others did the hard work.
