Can someone pleas explain why the media and politicians are using this name. It a comical name but Cameron has chosen to use it intentionally but I really don't know why.

We called the turtle on our holiday Kevin. I think you may be on to something here...calling him John just wouldn't have fit I don't think.

It's simple and it sticks in your mind. You will always know who it is you want to get caught and fed slowly through a mincer, feet first.

The OH was asking who he was earlier. She suggested it was likely to be a jokey nickname for some people in the UK already, eg:

Isn't that how he's referred to by IS, due to his English accent (Beatles reference). The media picked up on it and now that's how he's known in the public consciousness.

Even if CMD know's the suspects real name, he's unlikely to use it in public in case he's wrong.

Getting close - because there were 4 guards for the captives who were British, the captives called them the 'Beatles'. Each one had a name, and this particularly offensive individual was given John, after Mr Lennon.

Why give these people what they want? If the Islamic State refer to him as Jihadi John why not refer to him as something he'd hate - Gay Gordon, Paul the Pig, or name him after a famous Shiite or Jewish figure (nothing against Shiites or Jews however Islamic State members would hate this).

Or just refer to him by his real name - surely the spooks must be 100% sure about his identity by now.

This.

I why aren't we waging a media war against IS? Why are we, collectively lending them legitimacy by referring to them by their names such as IS / ISIL etc and calling them jihadists?

We and the media should be referring to them in the strongest derogatory terms. The French, in this instance, got it bang on by coining Daesh.

A propaganda war is every bit as important as bombing the c*nts to kingdom come.

Because that would probably lead to reprisals against his family who are probably innocent & respectable.

Recent history suggests otherwise - we didn't see any reprisals against the family of Lee Rigby's killers, or the 7/7 mass murderers, or Anjem Choudhary and his groupies.

rofl

No, they're probably not. Were they innocent, or respectable, they'd already have identified their son/brother/husband/whatever to the authorities.
