Yes although I think this process sets the record straight on the validity of the disc if not surrendered
That's what we don't know
The disc may be valid but not DVLA's computer
(BTW There's no problem with buying a new disc even though there's another in place as we saw in earlier thread about buying a 2nd hand car)
So as DVLA are the authority with relation to your cars tax status, it looks like whilst you have a round bit of paper that says you're taxed, it's been rescinded by the DVLA at the point of SORN, as the owner hasn't sent it back it's value has been lost, and the vehicle isn't TAXed frown

Another nail in the coffin.

And what happens to the money ?

Apparantly they can only do that if theyve been asked, normally youd say I want to SORN my car and here is the tax disc please give me some cash.
However there's no time limitation between the time you declare SORN and when you offer your disc up for a refund. This can allow you to declare SORN for no insurance and hold onto the disc.
If you do it the other way around and end up with lapsed disc & no SORN, expect to receive a fine

Unless you apply for a refund it is lost.

There is a limitation in as much as you will only receive a refund on each full month left to run at the point you post the disc back to them , or surrender it at the Post Office .

yes you can only apply for full months tax refund whereas your insurance runs out on a daily basis. they might try to SORN from the current month beginning too

Is anyone else willing to be a guinea pig (without breaking any law)?
i.e. SORN their car due to no insurance but keep the tax
Then when you reinsure phone up DVLA and ask/tell them to unSORN it as the car still has tax.
or
if you sell the car and it automatically unSORNs and the DVLA systems says unlicensed, phone DVLA and tell them the car is still taxed.

You might have to go beyond the initial help system and not put it on road until the tax status is confirmed

In the case of a new owner who buys a car with a genuine ( not forged ) tax disc on it , they should not be penalised if the seller did not tell them the car had been SORN'd .

Unlikely, IMO..

Firstly, a change of vehicle keeper cancels any previous SORN declarations and, secondly, I remain firmly of the opinion that valid tax and SORN cannot co-exist on the same vehicle.
