It's only page 2 on my computer! Anyway, Sussex Police don't seem to share your skepticism.

They will look like right idiots if created a public appeal over a fake video
Of course if it turns out he was doing about 120 or something they'll be claiming speeding is speeding and the appeal was still justified, but they can't complain about stretched resources when they keep investigating unverified st off of twitter.

Exactly this. On a related note, for the systems that read the actual signs with a camera, how would they work with foreign cars. I.e. if somebody from the continent travels over to the UK, would it be trying to limit their MPH speed as it registered the signs as KPH?
Unlikely - if the car is smart enough to be able to read signs, it's probably going to smart enough to know which country it's in and adjust accordingly

Shame though, as if true, it would presumably work the other way, so we'd all be cruising at 130 on the way to LeMans....
My car reads road signs and tells you the speed limit on the dash. It doesn’t work if I cover the camera lens on the windscreen though winkhehe

That's going to require a fair bit of skill to do.

It's usually instinctively obvious when something is sped up a lot as everything is sped up. Whereas in reality, somethings don't speed up, whilst others do to a point. If the car is cartoonishly bouncing up and down in a manner in which suspension doesn't behave, that'd be obvious, for example.

You also need to think of the audio. If you speed-up the video you increase the pitch of the audio as side effect so it matches the video. This can then be lowered a 'pitch shifter' or similar, but I think there'd be issues with elements of the audio that are constant e.g. the tyre noise and gear box changes. The rate of revs would also be an issue. It appears he starts in 3rd and ends up in 7th (assuming it has 7). If he's obtaining the audio from lower gears then they rev a lot quicker, and that sounds different.

I think the audio would have to be added after to have any realistic chance of making it work.

I think it'd take some skill to pull off.

now given that stuff like can be faked (look at various car/racing films) if a bored geek decided to leak a faked vid purporting to be real footage could/would there be any legal repercussions?

I read here on PH a while ago about someone with a version of this system in their car where the camera was picking up the wrong speed because it was supposedly reading the speed limit roundels on the back of lorries/vans and displaying them as the speed limit for the road in question. I don't know if they picked up any of those in km/h that might come up as "90" or not though.

I wouldn't have thought so unless the person creating it was intending to pervert the course of justice somehow.

A bit more detail on the Daily Mail website. One arrested for aggravated vehicle taking, so it wasn't his mate's car. It was the car his mate had pinched.

Can the Police use the cars telematics to provide further evidence....one assumes that 200 mph might show up somewhere?

Why is that then? I can see it might not be enough on it's own, but mobile phone records can be used as evidence, and car's telematics were used to get the crossbow murderer? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-51466273

Depends on the car. Some cars may have built in telematics or options that provide it, but it is definitely not something that is standard on modern cars by any stretch.

Telematics are also used for some “black box” insurance policies.

Irregardless the telematics in that crossbow case was used to locate the car at a given time, not for real time tracking.

Its a rehash of the Sussex police statement. The statement says the car was seized out of area https://www.sussex.police.uk/news/sussex/news/news...

Suppose all will become clear in due course.

Selfish act putting others at risk for the sake of bragging rights to his likely equally thick mates..
Er, what?

Do you think that Audi make a car that can do those speeds and stick a set of drum brakes on it?

My Audi’s listed as having a top speed a little less than this guy did, it’s only good for 198mph, but it’s definitely equipped for those speeds.
