I heard a rumour that it is against 'civil liberties' for speed cameras to take photos from the front of the car. Is this yet another urban legend?

Yes it is an urban legend as you have the option to not have your photo taken, purely by driving under the speed limit!!!
There is nothing subversive about these type of photos
that would contraveneyour civil liberties.

Interesting 'cos I was first told this 'legend' by a policeman. (Who works in complaints which must make him a popular bloke).

Am I right in saying that one photo does not corroborate the other, but that the speed-sensor within the GATSO is corroborated by a manual check of the distance the car has travelled between the two photos (using those little white dashes on the road)?

Something like that. The second photo obviously shows the distance travelled within the little white lines. This corroborates the actual electronic speed calculation as the camera flashes are at a constant time interval. The faster you travel, the further up the white dashes you appear in the second photo.
as the distance between the lines is known, the speed can be calculated from that as well if there appears to be a problem with the electronic calculation.

If for instance you were travelling at 30mph and the unit malfunctioned taking your photo and registering a speed of 48mph, it would be easy to define the actual speed from the position of the vehicle in relation to the white lines,
If that makes sense!

Using s=ut + 1/2 at2 the 1/2 at2 bit is zero assuming no acceleration took place therefore s=ut where u= velocity s = distance and t = time.

Time is fixed by the time between the two photographs. Distance can be measured from the lines in the road and therefore velocity can be calculated. As Gatso triggers when the car is travelling in the other direction then it muast be possible to trigger the thing in reverse by exceeding the speed limit. The pictures would come out in the wrong order and it might be fun to confuse the system.

The truvelo camera should only ever be passed while wearing a tony blair or alistair darling mask!!! That way the genuinly guilty can be brought to justice.
