HGV speed limits to rise to 50 mph?

No, it was scraped. Brake said an extra 30 trillion drivers a year would die if we did 80mph on motorways so that was that. This self appointed group that knows everything about anything to do with our roads were of course the correct people to listen too.
The curious thing is that BRAKE was originally founded after what I believe was an LGV accident. So they've become so anti car they've forgotten to be anti truck or they would have lobbied against this. Or maybe they get so much govt funding they only lobby the govt when the govt have told them to.herewego said:

I can't recall the last time I followed an HGV going as slow as 40 on a single carriageway. How will this deliver the improvements when the HGV's already do 56 on these roads?
Let's see what happens when it comes in.
You won't see liveried supermarket lorries exceeding the limit because customers dob them in.Let's see what happens when it comes in.
The new limit is a good idea as once had two cars nearly have a head on collision next to my cab as one of them decided to overtake without looking properly. I was doing 40mph.

It's been possible to auto enforce by size for a long time. Don't know about other areas, but ABD have mentioned a few in Warks for some time.
If you drive past a GATSO (on an NSL SC) at 60 in a Ford Transit Connect, for example, where the limit is 50 for that class of vehicle, how does the GATSO tell that you're not driving a Land Rover Discovery, with a 60 limit? It's been possible to auto enforce by size for a long time. I presume a standard GATSO isn't fitted with ANPR which compares every single reg number against their registered vehicle category?
I have heard stories from local residents near the notorous Redgate junction mentioning similar

From what I have seen it depends if the drivers are contractors or employees of the goods they are carrying.Royal Mail articulated vehicles seem to stick to 40, which I often see around here.
Non-liveried drivers cabs seem to be more willing to break the 40 limits.

Customers don't need to dob them in. They are tracked by gps and it flags up back at the depot. Was an agency driver for asda and they had tv screens in the transport office which showed where all the lorries were and they had colour coded symbols showing if a vehicle was speeding.

Not only do we get charts from head office showing speeding violations, we are also monitored on braking, cornering, acceleration and engine idle times. They proposed 25 mins at idle per day to be a target, but I pointed out that you could easily double this simply driving in to London for a single delivery.
The system also recently showed one of our trucks traveling at 105 mph, so it needs some tweaking
Our works van actually beeps at you if you corner too fast or give it some gas etc.You don't even have to be going especially quick for it to do so, either :/
