Cameras that can read number plates - such as those used in London's congestion charging zone - will also be used to trap uninsured drivers.

What about the uninsured driver on a legal car? I have three vehicle and just about keep up with the paperwork now, I wonder if I could set up a direct debit?

You've hit the nail on the head there; yet another reason why robotic cops aren't any good.

High time 3rd party insurance was automatic and applicable to the vehicle not the driver, presumably paid for as part of the road fund licence.

The 'Motor Insurance Database' or MID is aimed at reducing the number of uninsured drivers. I think it should help - But is it a temporary plaster...

I.e. Chav buys modded Nova. Doesn't bother / can't afford insurance - so doesn't bother. Then needs Car Tax, doesn't bother, then needs MoT doesn't bother. Then crashes car and increases premiums for all. a lady from Direct Line on Radio Five said that uninsured drivers add between £30 & £50 annual premium to us honest drivers.

In my humble opinion Tax & MoT's (and potentially insurance) should be linked & in on the one sticker. If this sticker had a unique ref (not registration) on it that linked to the MID for insurers to capture from us 'goodies' then all three elements would be required to legally drive the car...

Perhaps we should make the penalties for uninsured / not taked or SORNED vehicles stronger by immediate collection & crushing within a week?

if I need to drive it I do so on 3rd party which my insurance policy allows me to do.

I've never seen an insurance policy which allows you to drive another car that you own third party; mine have only ever covered me for driving a car belonging to someone else. Is it trade insurance or something?

Indeed. Thin ice, there bigdods

and DOC cover is being removed by many companies from the end of this year because it's being widely abused.

Anyways, thanks for the heads-up DvD, you certainly helped me get a full month's extra refund on a tax disc (October tomorrow) and may have saved me a fine if this additional stealth tax on generally law-abiding motorists is brought in sooner than later...cheers

What the hell is going on with the basic rights in this country of innocent until proven guilty?

I don't understand how that basic right can be violated and no one even blinks! Happened once already and has anyone checked to see how much difference it made? Afterall if you are not buying tax then the chances are you haven't got insurance either.

I haven't seen any remarkable drop in my insurance since SORN..............

You know I never even considered that - I had always assumed that the 3rd party cover included any car- I am going to have another read of my insurance policy. Just goes to show - you should always read the small print !

edited to add: ok, I have checked the wording and blimey you are right it has to be owned by someone else - ah well just have to transfer the old bangers into the wifes name then ;-)

Looks like they will be getting a few three day SORN requests whilst a number of competing insurance quotes are considered...
