I have emailed them telling them I think it is a great idea, and want to take part. I want to see what they actually want me to do, and will report back. If they want to know what car I drive, I will give them the 10 year old Corsa's details (our second car), not the M3's, think they might spot my plot with that.

P.S. I will alter the sticker to say "Community Safe Car, keep up if you can", or something to that effect. That will be good.

- scan it and post it on here - I would love a copy in the back of my car

(or even better- the bike )

Unofficially it happens here in Cheshire anyway full of retired jobs worths with all else to do than drive incredibly slowly everywhere,

Didn’t get the post at first everything has gone back to front without me changing anything

The seriously amusing aspect is that they think, resolutely, in their minds that they are doing something valiantly valuable for the commmunity. Voluntarily increasing congestion by regimentedly sticking to speed limits sounds like the thinking of a dull mind to me.

Email sent:

Dear Sir/Madam,

I saw the details of your pace car scheme.

Surely you realise that over 90% of accidents occur under the speed limit, so surely if you put your effort into reducing those accidents your time is far more profitably spent, and you would statistically be much more effective in helping people.

Speed is significant in very few accidents, driver training and hazard awareness is a far more effective approach to saving lives. Do the RIGHT thing and do it PROPERLY.

cheers
Tony

How about we resurrect the good old Red Flag scheme to warn the good people of Doncaster that some interfering old duffer in a battered Volvo 340 (GL no less ! ) is approaching at snail's pace in order to do his civic duty as a "Community Prick Car" ?

I volunteer the knob who dreamt up this half-baked idea to be the Flag-bearer.

This scheme will work well, until someone gets a bit cross and runs one of these idiots off the road.

Dear Sir

This is quite possibly one of the silliest road safety schemes I have ever come across. While I applaud your willingness in attempting to make the roads safer for all, I have grave reservations about the effectiveness of this scheme.

It is an undeniable fact that the safest thing to do is not to impede the progress of other vehicles, regardless of the legality of their driving.

Employing civilians to deliberately impede moving traffic by travelling within the speed limit will only lead to more dangerous situations. Unskilled and impatient drivers will no doubt try to overtake these vehicles, often in dangerous positions. Incidents of road rage may also occur.

I ask you to reconsider your position on this dangerous scheme. Perhaps you should be consulting with experts on road safety (for instance, serving Police traffic officers, or the Institute of Advanced Motoring, or the RAC), instead of inventing ideas that surely will make our roads a more dangerous place for all.

Kind Regards

Well I'd laugh if I wasn't crying! I shall also apply for a sticker as I sometimes drive past/through Doncaster and feel I should do my bit.

Maye the 'Pace' cars should be kitted out with strobes/decals a la F1 safety cars?

If you want you can also make 'suggestions' direct to the Mayor at themayor@doncaster.gov.uk

And, did you realise that speeding is at number eight on the list of factors causing accidents on our roads today. Can you even think of another seven? I'll start the list with:

Cars driving too slowly....

sounds like a rather silly idea, what gives these pace car people this right? are they competent advanced drivers? or will it be the micra blue rinse brigade driving even slower than normal? i do hope they stick to the speed limit in dense fog! let people drive how they want! As i'm sure the majority of us on here driver to the conditions and adhere to 30/40 limits but when the nsl appears drive accordingly. i encounter a number of numpty 'safe drivers' on back roads to work, when i overtake i get a barage of flashes, do i care? they should stick to their driving, and if i wish to overtake let me worry about that!! tosspots!

Has noone considered that most insurance policies specifically forbid pace-setting on the highway -- furthermore, this might even be a business use. I can only assume that the Pace Cars will have substantially increased insurance costs, and be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law should they fail to have proper cover.

Has any called the number on the release to ask about this aspect? Suspect it would close the whole thing down in a single blow.
