Thanking drivers should be the job of the passenger if they're otherwise unoccupied. Driving one handed whilst on a shout is wrong IMHO.
Hows he changing gear?

What if there is no passenger?

I think about 90% of us give a quick wave to helping motorist as well when driving, and all our cars and trucks are manual to.

Obviously if you're going through corners and/or on a bumpy road you won't, but if there's nothing special going on i can see no harm in thanking motorist to make way.

When i'm in a response car (so without a crewmate) i'll have to move my hands around as well (radio, terrafix, siren/airhorn buttons).

And who doesn't change his cdplayer here even on highspeed, i don't think many people think "ow i'm above the speedlimit now, i can't touch any other buttons anymore"...

On occasion I try to commentate on my driving, (when I'm on my own in the car otherwise I sound a bit mad), as a way of checking up on myself. It's bloody hard work!!
