If I saw a speed camera on fire would I call the fire brigade? No. I would let that damn thing burn.
Thats a shocking attitude to have. Sure no one likes camera vans but you're telling me you'd let someone burn to death for having to work in one?.
Lets hope there arent too many people around with your attitude. How would you feel if someone said they'd be prepared to let you burn due to your chosen job?.

Really very sad.
I think he was talking fixed cameras, not vans with operators.
Yes, I was talking about fixed cameras.... you actually thought I would stand by and watch someone burn to death.... ha ha I do hate these people yes, but I have morals ...

Fixed Cameras!

Thermite, the only way to be sure!hehe HTH

As for the guy in Aus, it all sounds a bit like Michael Douglas in Falling Down to me.

IMHO with the amount of Buttfking the motorist is getting through Tax and Stealth Taxes I am supprised that there has not been more attacks on the "system".
I can't (on the basis what we know about this case) condone attacking the guy inside the van but could, perhaps see how events and attiudes could lead to such an event.

You call yourself the motorist's friend but all I ever seem to read of you, or about you, is nothing constructive what-so-ever.

You seem almost joyful at the attack on a (to quote you) "SCUM"era operator.

That is far from the motorist's friend. If anything, you are the genuine motorist's enemy as you are doing no good for the genuine argument against speeding policies with such statements.

The late Paul Smith was a good example of somebody who had the right, legal, ethically correct approach.
We'd lose nothing at all if "captain gatso"'s account were to become so many disparate bits, drifting aimlessly on the ethereal winds of the intertubes.

I really dont know.... I am not sure I would be able to squeeze any drops out under that kind of pressure... it's not easy when someone is watching, let alone expecting your pee to douse their flames.... Anyway... I might singe my pubes.... How would I explain that one away?

This guy Only broke a window and then ran away when the alarm went off so not exactly a psycho!

I am also suprised we have not seen more serious events than this, i often have fantasies about having a brake failure and driving straight over/through scammer vans..

Im currently at work at the moment. However, that aside. If you go onto Youtube and type "burnt speed camera" There is a chap on a motorbike who burns the fix camera. Interesting to watch. Alot of folk drive past and not one person stops.

Absolutely; and even with his paper-based-legal-approach he was shot down and ignored, pushed to the back etc. But, surely, the answer is not violence?
Of course the answer is not violence.
However, Captain Gatso is not advocating violence, he is WARNING of it occuring if the public at large continue to be teated the way they are by the government!
I myself have warned of this - the public are aggrieved on so many issues - taxes, interest rates, fuel prices andspeed cameras. At the same time they see government ministers and MPs with their noses in the expenses trough!
There will come a point when even reasonable men and women will say STOP! Enough is enough, and it will be just like the poll tax riots all over again!

Any "face" of government, real or perceived will become a target... some with good reason, and some undeserving.

At 27 years old, you are not going to remember the previous riots we have experienced, or the conditions under which they came about.
Captain Gatso is popular in the media because he is doing what many wish they could do themselves. It's unusual for the government not to realise what the people want and go some way towards meeting their expectations (not).

You should let the posters who respond here judge the posts of others, since PistonHeads is a forum, not a news media.
If the Captains (or any others) posts dont fulfill what others expect, then they will respond (or blank) accordingly, and you might have your eyes opened to something which you were not aware.
Stifling debate by exerting your own views over others just puts you in the same league as the government, and could lose you the respect of posters who want to respond, and not find stories deleted or edited to sanitise the site.

He is not advocating that others should do it, and is not attacking camera vans!!

.
IIRC the type of people who were rioting in thepolltax riots would fall into one of the following categories today.

1: EcoMentallist, liberal, do-gooder, who now supports green tax and anti speed propaganda.

2: Good fornothing Chav from a sink estate milking the system.

The target of todays oppression is the normal, reasonable guy who it will take a lot to get him to brake the law and protest.

All this is supported by those who are quick to take action as they are either in full support or are not paying taxes anyway.

I agree with speed limits in urban areas and see no problem with whatever measures are used to enforce them, as long as they don't create accidents.

As for your Nazi comments- it's the usual poppycock sprouted by people who have no better argument than to revert to the ridiculous.

I'm not sure who adopted who, but I don't think Captain Gatso's attitude reflects that well on PH.
I would like to clarify that there is absolutely ZERO link between Captain Gatso and PistonHeads or Haymarket, be it formally or informally.

Except when he's quoted in some of the news items, obviously...

Hi MillWheel,

I agree with your sentiment entirely, and as part of the moderation team it's a difficult balance between hosting comments and them being discussed versus not having them appear on our site - we battle with it everyday. The instances to which I referred to above were in respect of comments that we believed were not for the good of the site to have, whether they are disagreed with or not. It, of course, is not a decision we ever take lightly and is no less important to a speeding thread than a totally non motoring related discussion.

I hope that explains a little why such decisions may get made.
Tony
