Not really ha. Rear bumper for a Scirocco is 200 quid. Golf is about 140 quid.
Depends on the car. Obviously there are exceptions. Not forgetting you can buy used parts off Ebay which are perfectly good ... but peoples time (that they spend browsing PH) is far too valuable! :-)
new M-sport genuine bumper 450.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-BMW-E60-5-Series...
Whole bumper with diffuser and PDC loom under £200.
Which would be as new after a respray..... my point is 2 minutes of my time and I've 1/4'd your price quoted for a bumper alone.
Painting £250 at public cost and fitting a bumper is something you and a mate can do on a Saturday morning. Time = 2 hours.
Assuming I'm paid hourly at my annual salary and it takes 3 hours (if you are cocking about). that's £50
So for say £600 tops that's a new BMW 5 Series M sport bumper painted and fitted.
Probably not the best example but you get my point .
Are these actually genuine parts though? Where do they get genuine BMW parts from that they can then sell for a fraction of the price you'd pay from a BMW dealer? I get it when it's made by another company like an alternator or brake discs, but only BMW will make genuine BMW bumpers. To be able to buy them on ebay at less than you can get them from a main dealer is a little bit odd isn't it?Depends on the car. Obviously there are exceptions. Also, you might be willing to cock around on ebay getting the bits yourself then getting it painted and fitted, but the vast majority of non petrol heads are just going to want to drop the car of at a garage and pick it up when it'sa done and to be quite honest this isn't especially unreasonable.

stuff
Only one seller selling a new genuine bumper, which there wasn't at the time as Ebay is my 'Go too' place. But I get what you saying
OK, you do things differently if it's your fault but why mess around when it's someone else's fault?

It's a genuine BMW piece. Dealer mark ups can be huge as can bodyshops - Bumper may only cost £650 but they charge you £800 for the pleasure of making a phone call.
It's not odd at all to buy genuine parts for less online than main dealers, to think you can't is silly.
Sheep - I understand that. :-)
But here we are petrolheads and for me at least it seems the easiest thing to do for small cheap things.
Where as Mrs Mabel at number 47 may not, that's totally fine. Just to me it seems silly to risk running premium rises over the next 5 years which cost more than it would have cost to do it outside of insurance. Knocked off wing mirrors, bumper scuffs etc.

Not from when I had dealings with insurance companies. They know the price of parts, they screw you on labour rates and consumables. You cant overcharge insurance companies but Joe Public often stands a 20% mark up.It's a genuine BMW piece. Why would I want to buy a second hand bumper (probaly be in a worse state than the one to be repaired) off of ebay and go through all the hassle of getting it painted and fitted?
I also dont see why I should put my hand in my pocket for someone elses mistake.
Thats why I have fully comp insurance with protected no claims to pay for stuff when someone cant see a big black car in front of them.
To be honest I just like the comments it all brings up on PH.

Why should I hunt for the right bumper and mess around having it painted and then fit it myself to save some tosser who runs into a stationary car at a pedestrian crossing a few bob. That's why we pay insurance, let them have all the hassle and pick up the tab. Adding a non fault claim made zero difference to my renewal quote (which they sent before I phoned to add the claim).
The only issue I see is even though its not your fault, if they cant claim the costs back from the 3rd party it will end up as a fault claim due to your insurers paying out. Well that's my understanding of it at least.

BMW only sell their genuine parts through main dealer parts departments. Yes markup can be huge, but this is because you can't get them from anywhere else so they are not competing with anyone else. There may be a very reasonable explanation as to how someone has managed to get hold of genuine BMW parts and is now flogging them for a fraction of the price on ebay but I don't know what that reason is. BMW are hardly likely to be doing it and neither are main dealers. Who else can get hold of genuine BMW parts at cost price?

However back in the real world I'd agree.
The fakers are basically making moulds of genuine items and reproducing at 1/5th the original cost. For years there have been warnings over bearings, hubs, waterpumps - you name it someone in China has copied it. Only the quality is awful, generally fail within a short period and fit is never as good as OE. But hey, look on the bright side, you saved £400 but your £40k car looks like st with 1/2" gaps in the wrong places....

I'm not sure what you'd call it for BMW, but for VW/Audi/Skoda/Seat etc, you can go to TPS. Provides all genuine stuff at much cheaper prices than if you went to the main BMW dealer. All comes from the same guys that wrap it in VW packaging.
Used bumpers trade hands sometimes at 1/4 of the retail price, or even less! As for new genuine bumpers if you've had one laying around for a while maybe you want to shift it? I would not expect a rear bumper for an E60 5 series to be over 500 quid anyway so it seems about right.
You can keep saying "oh em geez they're all fakes!" but doesn't make it true.

Even if people were willing to accept doing the groundwork to avoid an insurance increase (in spite of many not actually observing these increases), you have no guarantee of the quality of a part you buy on Ebay.

I've had a quick look and can't find any body parts for sale on TPS, perhaps you could provide a link?xjay1337 said:

I didn't say that. I asked you a specific question. Where does the person who is selling a "genuine BMW parts" on ebay get it from that allows him to sell it for much less and still make a profit?I'm not saying they're all fakes, I just don't know how anyone gets hold of a genuine new BMW bumper other than from BMW who are unlikely to sell it to them for such a discount, unless BMW are in the business of allowing ebay sells to dramatically undercut their franchise network.
I get it with a parts made by a third party where they also sell them under thier own brand, but not a part made by BMW themselves.
TPS is owned and run by VAG
https://tps.trade/what-is-tps
The TPS Network was an industry first when it was launched back in 2007. It was the first trade operation to be totally owned and run by an automotive manufacturer - Volkswagen Group.
Ebay parts are a pain, you order bumper, turns up, slightly different fixings, you then need to send back etc etc etc
Even if does fit , if its a pattern one, even mms different shape will make a difference
Then you have to factor in the time taken to search/deal with/order parts and when you have a family and a busy job you get 0 free time and I wouldn't fancy spending my lunch breaks es ringing up a bruv in slough to enquire where my bumper is as the body shop are waiting to fit it, before it turns up 3 weeks laer..
The above examples are bad enough rectifying a own fault accident on a older car, on a 2015 Touareg that someone else drove into with fully comp insurance, I would be exactly like the OP and wanting my insurance and the other persons insurance to deal with it and cover it!

How much is a bumper directly from BMW?I'm not saying they're all fakes, I just don't know how anyone gets hold of a genuine new BMW bumper other than from BMW who are unlikely to sell it to them for such a discount, unless BMW are in the business of allowing ebay sells to dramatically undercut their franchise network.

Not through a bodyshop but if you phone up and ask "can I buy a rear bumper for my E60 M-Sport please" how much will it be?
Getting hold of bumpers is not hard. Breaking cars, spares or repairs, people who upgrade from one type to the next type up (EG Se to M-sport, M-sport to M5), likewise sometimes warehouses shut down, stock gets sold on for debt repayments.
I guess this is difference between me and you where I've had to use lots of online parts and never had a problem if you buy with your eyes open.
