Suprised to hear about the £4k thing you mentioned Bob! Thats certainly not the case in my force

Not as surprised as me at the time - this was about 4/5 years back and from what I was told it wasn't 'Official' policy ie not written down anywhere but that figure was the criteria used by the Crime Management Unit.

Prior to having this info I asked the orignal officer that dealt with case whether motorway CCTV footage had been checked - the only real ways out of Swansea are along the M4. The answer No. When I asked whether Dyfed/Powys had been informed - Yes.

Couple of days later I telephoned D/P myself and no one had any knowledge of the crime. But what a difference - they took copious amounts of info and over the next 6 months I had 5 or 6 phonecalls off them asking for more specific info as caravans matching the description had been stopped. On one occasion I was even patched through to the officer at Pembroke Dock cos he wanted more info.

We suspected it had been taken to Ireland as it was a German 'Van, beloved of the 'itinerant community' and there were several large and unofficial campsites in the area at the time. There were also some eyewitness reports, one from an ex Security Guard on one of the sites that placed several 'well known' itinerants in the area immediately before the van went missing.

Whether I was unlucky with SWP and lucky with D/P I don't know, but I was left with the impression that if it had been stolen from D/P's area my chances of having it back would have been far greater.

Just my two bobs worth here- Is it not the case that the cops are doing such a good job of jailing the scrotes that our jails are full to capacity and the judges etc are being told not to jail the neds (Scots Chav).

Sorry to drag this back up again, been off the board for a while.

What I didn't understand about this program was the guy in the white Scirocco. To recap, a mechanic was driving a white Scirocco back from an MOT test, the car wasn't taxed but the mechanic was insured. This of course is exactly correct - with the proper insurance it is legal to drive an untaxed vehicle on the public road as long as it's on the way to or from a pre-booked MOT test. However, I was amazed at how much time the PCs spent talking to the owner about this - after all, he'd done nothing wrong. Although he was responsible as the registered keeper, everything he had done was right, but the tone of the incident was that the motorist had "got away with it".

And then one of the PCs had the gall to take the mickey out of him for wanting to restore a Mk2 Scirocco, when the PC had restored a B-Reg Volvo 240! Pot calling kettle, or what?

If the car had no insurance ..... how did it get to the garage for the work to be done ? Lets assume the mechanic picked it up shall we.

Why did they spend so much time talking to the owner on the phone ? How about you need to know the mechanic was who he said and was in lawful possession of the car ..... and to establish if the keeper had got insurance or not - you wouldn't want him driving his car away from the mechanic would you ?

Perhaps it was all innocent but perhaps it wasn't ......

Believe it or not police actually pay the same taxes and therefore their own wages too! Painful when money gets deducted from your own wages to pay your wages - figure that one out!!!!!!!!

I believe that makes you a self-employed civil servant

Have a word with one of the PH accountants - you should be able to find all sorts of tax advantages there!!
