Had you not agreed a PX price when you ordered?
If there was going to be an 11 month wait I doubt the dealer would have offered one? When I bought my BMW and was part ex-ing my car they called a number of buyers to get a price and offered me as part ex exactly what they were offered by the buyer.
There was no profit or loss for them.
It was a crap price, but they were quite up-front with me that it would be.

I think they offer a ballpark figure and then a firm figure at buy time.

You might as well do that yourself, and then buy the new one from an Internet broker. No sales people to deal with either. At the time of order the dealership had a 2 a month allocation and I was 21st on the list so a price for the PX was not given but an understanding that they would treat me fairly! So their idea of fair was to offer me £1k less than trade so basically they wanted full list for their car and make £1k for a phone call on mine!
So I kept the car another 2 years as a second car and sold it privately for over £2k more than they had offered 2years previously!

Sounds fair for a deal against a new car they can't get another of for nearly a year.So their idea of fair was to offer me £1k less than trade so basically they wanted full list for their car and make £1k for a phone call on mine!

You could have also taken the deal and sold your new car for more profit than your perceived loss if the new car was that desirable and in demand.

So let's see if I understand your theory, You could have also taken the deal and sold your new car for more profit than your perceived loss if the new car was that desirable and in demand.
I let them bend me over on my trade in so that maybe I can regain the loss by selling the new car and then have no vehicle!
The logic of a motor trader!

Morally – I’d hope the money would be returned.
I’ve paid deposits for a car before at a BMW garage and the dealer said it was refundable if I saw/tested the car and changed my mind.
I guess it depends on which stage the purchase process is at?
Is it just a deposit to hold a used car for a few days, or is it a deposit for a brand new odd-spec car from the factory?
I would expect a certain amount of customer goodwill from a Main Dealer.
Although I heard pretty much nothing but bad things about Ford dealers recently.
Yeah Ford dealers arent the greatest in my experience. I've had being completely ignored to having some salesman trying to guilt trip me into buying. Doesn't really make you feel like you should spend money with them.I’ve paid deposits for a car before at a BMW garage and the dealer said it was refundable if I saw/tested the car and changed my mind.
