Do not forget that they pay half or so price.
I have no issue with it, as prefer them to run around in decent vehicles.
The bit I cannot figure ...........why the Police are not allowed to "keep" the impounded vehicles and use them eg the number of decent 4x4's and German tackle, that the undesirables own and surely must be impounded would beggar belief.
PUWER ( provision and use of work equipment regulations) pure and simple , if you do not have full and verifiable history on vehicle and there's a mechanical failure or collision where the mechanical condition of the vehicle is brought into the slightest bit of question ... I have no issue with it, as prefer them to run around in decent vehicles.

Corporate Manslaughter is not the only piece of legislation which effects the choices of organisations in how they procure equipment of any nature

And the bloody NHS are at it aswell, Mercedes sprinters and BMW bikes. Whats wrong with transits and cub 90's? Heaven knows why the fire brigade need all of that high powered stuff too, taking the piss with my taxes I tell ya!
same ol' bks as the green eyed rantings about the police and their vehicles ... there's only five choices from three makers for A+E ambulance base vehicleat present
Sprinter van or chassis cab, Transit chassis cab and Fiat/Peugoet/Citroen van
cost wise i don;t think there's a lot in it
and the number of motorcycles the NHS use is vanishingly small (London , Birmingham and a few in the south west) - you do realise how much kit is carried by the bikes ( whether pedal of motorcycle) don't you

Yes, but a half price Skoda is still cheaper than a half price BMW, isn't it?Who said the Skodas are half list price?

We don't know what premium they pay for a BMW.
Even if the Beemer is a couple of grand more than an Octavia in terms of purchase prices, is it more reliable in the Police's experience?
Does the BMW do a better job? I would think it does, TBH.

It's not quite as simple as that (VAG cars aren't as discounted as the others) BMW won the contract we have due to the cost and length of warranty, none of the others could match it (we also purchase with another force and get them at a considerable discount) Our Skoda VRS was an absolute dog to drive after 70k and spent a lot of time in the workshop (our ARV's like their Skoda though we do buy a mixture)
Our BMW 5 series reach 200'000m with routine servicing. That is important. They are a tool. They are no good if they are in the garage. And 18 months later, people still want to pay decent money for them.
Now if we could get a Mondeo that meets the carrying capacity, weight limits, is Police Spec, has been type approved and is offered for peanuts then I'm sure it would be considered.
But who wants to buy a 200'000m Mondeo. The BMW gets a much better return, which adds to the cheaper through life costs. I personally couldn't give a toss what I drive if it does the job. But having been hit while stationary on the hard shoulder by a HGV, I can vouch that a 5 series is a nice, safe place to sit.

Is that really part of the type approval test?
X5s are used as motorway cars so yes safety is a consideration. The vRS is quick but it is more fatiguing at high speed, the seats are worse, the driving position less advantageous, it can't tow large vehicles, it's not as good in winter, etc. Gassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
