In addition to the re-instatement of MOT check on VRM Plates thought you maybe interested in this which I spotted in current edition of Police Review, the official journal of BritPol.

Agreed by NPIA, ACPO, DVLA and ANPR,a new system started last week where if Plod pulls you for a 'dicky' number plate they will send a photo of the plate with a short form to DVLA.

The driver of the offending vehicle has 28 days to fix the defect and send a photo to DVLA to prove it has been done.

Those that do not comply will have their VRM revoked by DVLA and details fed onto ANPR intelligence.

Glad to hear it. Too many tts driving round with stupid looking plates. I'll ignore the fact that it's only being clamped down on to help raise more money...

28 days? Give me 28 seconds on photoshop and I'll have it sorted. Just how does a photo of the plate change prove it's been done and that the plate on the car from that point on is fully compliant?

The mind boggles.

Ah, yes, but if you get pulled again with a dicky plate then DVLA might just revoke it without the 'put it right' option.

Isnt that essentially a pointlessly complicated "producer"?

So are the DVLA going stop making a small fortune from selling plates that they clearly know can be altered to spell things out? No? Thought not...

But having sold it to you, they will then withdraw it. No refund of course.
So you will now need a new number plate......

And why would they need a pointless photo from you to adopt that approach? As I understand it, currently the DVLA can revoke the plate at any time in any case, and you'd really have no leg to stand on if you were caught twice with illegal plates, photo or no photo. So, I fail to see what this adds?

I'm really hoping that there is something more to this new policy than the immediately obvious, because as it stands a child of 5 could point out the obvious flaws and uselessness of it and I'd hope that the people we entrust with upholding the law in this country would be a little more intelligent.

Will the photograph sent be good enough to prove the defect (ie calibrated in some way), or just a dodgy cameraphone type pic?

I guess it will soon be automated anyway with the existing roadside cameras issuing dodgy VRM penalties automatically...

If you haven't got a private plate, but still put it in some chavvy font, then what are they going to withdraw?

They'll just have to supply you with a new one anyway.

They'll issue you with a Q-plate, which'll devalue your car nicely.

Yep.
Eldar, no worries, I got it covered for you since you reside in Cumbria!

Won't satisfy those leeches on the bridges over the M6 though - you'll need the real thing!

Not sure about how effective this will be, but no issue in general with the plan.

My recently acquired car has a private plate in a shadow effect font (letters legal size/spacing though). This registration belonged to the previous owner and we're in the process of transferring it over (I got the V5 in my name, now doing the transfer). I'll be glad to get rid of these plates and put decent standard ones on.
