People get very confused over this.

I have a full car and bike licence, but a customer of mine was furiously arguing with me that I needed to do a CBT to ride a moped without L plates, even though I rode a Honda Fireblade!! Crackers.

You do have to watch DVLA, they're little devils and reducing your entitlements when you make an alteration to your licence. I send mine off for a change of address, and when it came back, I'd lost my entitlement to drive up to 7.5 tonnes and was restricted to 3.5 tonnes, as if I'd passed my car test 1997 on, whereas I passed in 1980.

I quick phone call and they apologised and agreed to put it right!

Either you passed before February 2001 in which case you have full moped entitlement (appears as the 'p' in fkp on your photocard licence - needless to say if you still possess a paper licence then you definitely passed before 2001!)

Or

You passed after February 2001 in which case you have fkp (code 122). Code 122 indicates that you have full moped entitlement, but it only becomes valid (for life) when you've obtained a CBT certificate.

L-plates do not come into this at all because this is all about full, not provisional, entitlements. The only time you'll use L-plates them is when you're actually doing the CBT course...

BUT - I've got full moped entitlement on mine -passed test in the 60's - My advice ,and that of my Biker Kids -GET CBT- it could just save yer life .
My opinion - make it compulsary for ALL to do CBT .

It is compulsory for all new drivers wanting to ride a moped or motorbike to do CBT first, and there's a very strong case for it being so.

Where I disagree with you is on retrospectivity. Why should someone who's been using their moped entitlement to, say, get to work for umpteen years suddenly find it taken off them until they've done CBT? They did what was required of them at the time, which is all they could have done.
Equally someone passing a car test now cannot drive vehicles bigger than 3.5 tonnes. Should that mean that everyone who passed their car test under the old, equally arbitrary (but less "safe") rules suddenly find themselves unable to drive 7.5 tonners and potentially lose their job/livelihood as a result? It may be safer alright but it is grossly unfair.
