They come at renewal time.
For his first speeding offence? Even that's going to be unlikely. I hope the OP posts back on here after renewal. I hope I'll never find out, but that's kinda comforting.

The you should've told them to do one, as they can't charge you for that. Go back and tell the. You want a refund as it was a not a valid time to levy a charge.
You reckon I can do that? I suppose you of all folk should know. The guy said they had to amend the policy documents (they did send new ones if I recall correctly)

You complain, go through that process (they'll refund during this process) and then onto the FOS if needed. It won't be btw
Been on the sauce again?

Common sense.
I know we don't like that though, as we need to be told precisely what is and isn't acceptable and pedantry is crucial. Of course this needs to be set against our absolutely hatred of the idea of a controlling Nanny State, apart from where we need the Nanny State, which we will rage against, unless we need it, but of course we have to oppose it, because it's what we fought against, ermm I mean for, I mean we have to oppose things like the Daily Mail, but we have to hate the lefties too and liberals too.

They won't, but in my experience when they realise the customer is upset about it and even knows who the trade body is, they will refund the money no problem. They should have never levied the charge.
Do you really think a complaints dept don't know who the ABI is? Your advice is usually better than this. LoonR1 said:

The fact that the customer knows who the ABI is and has called up to complain and mention them should do the trick. Proof of the pudding, let him give it a go and see what response he gets. If they tell him to eff off, you were right and I was wrong.
No trade body is going to tell you to eff off. They're going to smile nicely at you and maybe even take your details. Then they'll either do eff all or tell you to ring your insurer. LoonR1 said:

Loon, suggest you read what I wrote. I'm not suggesting he calls the ABI. Of course not. He should call the insurers, demand his money back and threaten to report them to the ABI. That is all. TwigtheWonderkid said:

To which most customer facing staff will say "who?" and all complaints staff will say "oh" about. Just advise him correctly to make a complaint via the internal complaints process rather than complicating the situation with irrelevances.
In fact, I'm so pissed off with you I might report you to the PFA
