I can't turn the fog lights on unless main beams are on full beams, not even if they're only dipped!
A) Whats the difference?
B) Labelled as foggies in the manual.
One you use in fog the other when it's dark. Driving lights are normally wired to come on when you select high beam. Front fogs are as about as useful as having a lighted candle at the front of the car whereas driving lights will turn night into day.

The difference is its illegal to drive with fog lights on except when there's dense fog (well that's what Plod told me when he stopped me a few years ago, despite the numpty not realising they were driving lamps and not accepting my assurance as such).

They are correct - less than 100m. It is also illegal to have the front fogs on without the back fogs, illegal to dazzle with them, and illegal to leave them on.
I'm sure a BiB will correct me but I think that driving lights and fog lights have different E markings which allow the BiB to tell what they are.

Many moons ago I had a car (cant remember which one now) which had a F and R printed on the dashboard light that came on when the fogs were turned on. Very good but I guess the letters interfered with the designer aesthetics ....
Not using words saves the cost and inconvenience of (i) having the words translated & (ii) making a different dashboard for each different language market. That's why 'Merkin cars have words on everything - 'cos they don't GAS.

i might be being a bit pedantic, but for ages i've thought there should be some kind of test when you buy a new car, to prove you know what knob does what, and what that 'funny' light on the dash is for.
I was sitting in a traffic jam once behind some numpty with his rear fogs on, even though it wasn't foggy. After a while, I got out and tapped on his window and asked him to switch them off. His reply was "This car doesn't have rear fogs." "Yes, it does", I replied, pointing at the illuminated switch on his dashboard. He pushed it and the lights went out. "I wondered what that did", he said.
Sigh.

You might like to rephrase and qualify that, bpb?
Front fogs on without rear fogs? Quite in order. Some vehicle manufacturers limit your switching options but that is their choice. For example you could be in visibility <100m where you feel it is appropriate and helpful to have front fogs on, yet a vehicle behind you would be dazzled by your rear fogs. Therefore it is good practice to turn rears off, yet leave fronts on. Just one example.

i had a similar experience with one our storemen in work, he was driving along with his rear fogs on, when i pointed this out to him at work, he said he wondered why his rear window wasn't clearing!

Fair point thought there was some law behind it. Don't have front fogs on the current I've always rated just behind the beetle flower holder in the usefulness stakes.
