Earlier in the week I passed a van being looked over by a couple of VOSA inspectors on a small residential side road. Wasn't part of a police/DoT/VOSA check-point, just one VOSA Galaxy type thing. If they now searching for vehicles and pulling them at the road side, will they just be checking for road worthiness or will they be able to check MOT/insurance details?
Theyll be checking for safety and compliance. VOSA Galaxys will usually be found concentrating on HGVs though.
They concentrate on anyone they feel might be in an unroadworthy vehicle, cars are no exception. I think they had, or still are having, a purge on Land Rovers after the Muppet who modified his disco with dodgy brakes killed his kids (I think) a while back. No doubt next month it'll be something else, Toyotas maybe.
When I did an MOT course the guy running it said he was walking to work one morning and someone had stopped at the side of the road so he pulled him and went over his car, so they don't need to be in a vehicle to stop you.

Im not sure why youve quoted me here. From the VOSA men whove stopped me (and who I have talked to at length), Im confident that they go out every day with a very clear view as to whom theyre targeting; and it is usually HGVs.

What would happen if you just ignored them? Serious question?
They would call the police to stop you or they can report you for failing to stop.
Thankss

Sorry it's slightly off-topic, but am I right in thinking that there are a lot more weigh-bridges (or whatever they're called - things that measure a vehicle's weight) around than may seem apparent?

Yes, but you only have to drive for five miles.

Who is they've ?.

The people you go to when your friend/family have been injured/killed by an overweight truck, tired driver etc and you want answers/enforcement ?

Surely it's better to try and use a system that uses "intelligence" to weed out the dodgy operators rather than mithering everyone.

I've seen both sides as a holder of an operators licence and since seeing them out and about and knowing what their up to, the bit where it falls down is in the same areas as policing everything is driven by targets, so small things are all taken into account to provide fines and figures smile

More enforcement than education possibly ? As education doesn't raise revenue ?

If you read the story, youll see that they still have to take you to a certified weighbridge (which still has to be within five driven miles).

A very sensible investment in equipment and software by an agency in such a financial position then.

Still worthwhile in my opinion. You cant spot an overloaded vehicle by eye, so thisll allow them to identify likely pulls; enabling them to make far more of a difference per shift.

They still have an important function for fulfill, even if testing revenue is down. Can we honestly say that we expect them to cut back safety inspections because theyre no longer in-profit?

I was bein easy Babu smile thats why i had a smile, sos if you thought i was bein a bit harsh.

As for the linky, it's quite a skewed view as it's written by a union organisation, the very sort that are generally against any change or modernisation so departments can cut costs and work within budgets.

Maybe that's why the H/A are podding out so much in "joint" ventures with VOSA,BIB and anyone else who wants a wad of wonga that has to be spent furious how much taxpayers money is wasted daily is shameful.

And for the bored/technical amongst you

Page 86-90 has a bit about WIMS (oldish) but there's other interesting stuff smile
