Bath - "keen cyclist" councillor forcing 20mph limits

I invite the people of PH to follow this link and add to this debate.
Bath gained a Lib Dem council last year, by a factor of one councillor.
They have given the transport portfolio to a man who describes himself as a "keen cyclist", who has never held a driving licence. He is now setting about turning the whole place into one big pedestrianised cycle track, and is forcing motorised transport out of the city.
His latest wheeze is to employ a blanket 20mph limit throughout the entire city, including major arteries and trunk roads.
I'm sure some PHers could add sensibly to the debate...

This is the British form of democracy in action. I'm sure the people of Bath are more than able to make up their collective mind about the benefits of the scheme and in a few years they will get an option to comment via the ballot box. Unless anything changes between now and then.
Of course I am assuming that they will actually have a choice at that time. It is possible that they won't.

It's something in the water. I worked in Bath for 15 years, and I can categorically state that there are more nutters per square inch there than anywhere else I ever worked.
This does not make it a bad place. Far from it, I loved the place, but there are some very peculiar people around.

The council well and truly screwed up the traffic flow around the new Southgate shopping centre. The solution is to install another bus gate to stop cars from using one of the adjacent roads. On that basis, I'm not expecting a rational or successful outcome on the speed limits. Slowing the traffic with a 20mph limit is not tackling the root cause - too much traffic in the city centre to start with!
Given the man is a complete idiot, and stuck in post with no experience, it's possible he is not supported wholly by his department.
Perhaps your mole might like to enquire a little, and see if the signs department could suggest that the signage resembles this, with the number changed?

:which is pretty much what went through my head, and I left bath in 1993 so I can't imagine it's any better now....
