Didn't stop at accident
Discussion
Hi does anyone know if I'll be penalised for this?
Driving home from work 60mph down 70 mph limit road, go round bend and car in front is doing 30mph. Can't overtake so pull back and follow for about 200 yards to roundabout. When the car in front got to the roundabout the driver got out and came towards me shouting and swearing. I was frightened (he was bigger than me with tatoos!) so I reversed to drive round him. But a car had pulled up close behind and I bumped it, not hard. Didn't stop but drove home. I went to police and reported it within 60 mins. The person in the car behind has claimed that they were injured and the car is damaged. Will I be prosecuted for not stopping. I've seen the car and it's not damaged by the way but no doubt they can see compensation looming.

You have complied with the law regards obligations to others. You have reported immediately to the Police. There is no avenue to prosecute you as you have done nothing wrong in regard to reporting accidents.
If you did not hit the car behind hard, I would very much doubt if they were injured unless you set off their airbags and they were 'sucking a lollypop' at the time

I'm not criticising, but I am curious:
Given the fact that you could not overtake, it would sound to me like you were on a single lane road. I thought the NSL cannot not be greater than 60 for such a road.
Am I right?

supraman2954 said:Yes for single carriageway (not "lane") roads, but there are single lane, dual carriageways that are NSL. One local to me is wide enough for an overtake, but the numpties seldom allow enough room alongside for this to be a safe manoever - Streaky

V6GTO is absolutely correct Chris..You'll be perfectly ok..
You believed you were in serious danger and you drove away to prevent that...(remember poor Stephen Cameron getting stabbed to death by Kenneth Noye on a sliproad)..
You've reported it, so no worries...
You're too honest...If you'd have said the car behind ran into you...it would have been 100% their fault and you could have picked up megabucks in compensation...
Keep it simple and honest..best way everytime..

HI
Had my taped interview with the police yesterday, apparently the road rage guy in the car in front of me has sent a written statement to the police saying he was getting out of his car to check his bumper cos he thought I had bumped him, then I verbally abused him and drove off with a vee sign. This isn't true but he says he's a respectable retired civil servant. So who are they going to beleive an eighteen year old or him? I now have to wait to see if I'm going to be charged with due care and failing to stop at an accident. Is it fair that I was interviewed formally by the police but he won't be even though I have said he threatened me?

Hi just to update this thread, got a summons in the post this morning for driving without due care and failing to stop at an accident! Can't believe it the car that I reversed into has no damage to it but the driver is pursuing a hurt back and the guy in the car in front of me that threatened me appears to have no police action against him at all. I still feel that I am a victim. What is likely to happen to me in court points wise?
I do not underatand how you have been summoned for failing to stop at an accident? as you reported it with the hour, can one of the local BIBs explain for me?
cheers

Chris, this doesn't make sense?!
Is the guy in front also saying you went into the back of him? (hence - checking bumper for damage)
Go to court mate and explain it all through..
unable to overtake...stayed back... guy got out...was in fear of unlawful violence...drove off...reported minor knock to police...but didn't want to hang around...blah blah
I cant see this going anywhere without any independent witnesses...our jobs never do!
Try not to worry.

Yeah the guy in front reckons I touched his rear bumper, which I didn't think he's just getting himself out of any possible blame. I'm just worried I will get 6 points and then have to take my test again (only passed 12 months ago) I'm starting uni in sept after having having heart surgery in feb and won't be able to get there easily without a car.
