Car tax and insurance both expire today.
I renewed my insurance yesterday, with a different company.
I've just been refused tax at the post office, because my existing policy expires today, and the new tax disc will start tomorrow.
New insurance company don't email documents!, and could take up to 7 days to post.
So, I've now got to drive an untaxed car for up to a week.
What are the implications of getting stopped by the police?

Implications are the same as they've always been, You'd be very very unlucky to even draw their attention to the fact that you're driving around with an out of date Guinness label until it's REALLY out of date...so plenty of time for your ins cert to come through and for you to get a new tax disk..AND if your insurers do as they are supposed to do your insured status will be on the system already.

By 'really' I mean longer than a week out of date.Like I said unless you do something stupid to attract plods' attention your VED status shouldn't even be a tiny blip on their radar.
To avoid this situation again, either renew your insurance earlier (or take out a new policy earlier with a start dat ein the future), or do 6 months tax this time, then renew it for a year every year thereafter.

Fair enough, although suggesting a refund of the months tax on the last day of the month being refunded is a bit daft.As for the other bit, that does seem an expensive ay of doing it, when he could just have renewed earlier (or taken out new insurance with start date in the future) and then done the 6 month tax to remove the issue completely. Paying the extra couple of quid for a 6month policy is a lot cheaper than forking out for a whole months tax.
Post Office do not issue contination Excise Licences unless Insurance is produced covering the start of the new month of the continuation (and days beyond?)
If one can get an assurance from the New Company that new policy has been put on MIB forthwith then it should be possible to do it on line 1.4.12.
The big danger of driving without is that if stopped and Plod checks Insurance data base (MIB)it may come up as negative and all that implies.

I've insured with the same company for many years, and they email the policy immediately.
This years problem arose, because the new company wouldn't/can't email the doc's.
I could have have done it on line, but had some cash i wanted to use.
Anyway, by losing a month, I've now staggered the tax/insurance renewal, to this wont happen again.

You should be able to tax online today, under changes in the 2012 budget the grace period in which car owners can drive their cars without displaying a tax disc, which stood at seven days was extended to 14 days, following the payment of tax, note, the exemption on displaying only applies if you have paid for it.

It's the insurance that was the problem. The crossover point coincided with the tax. New insurance can take a week to appear on line, so you cant tax before then. By moving it a month he wont have the problem in the futureGassing Station | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
