They be getting bad in Zummerzett.........Ooo arr, ooo arr.......

BY HEATHER PICKSTOCK
North Somerset Times heather.pickstock@archant.co.uk

A speed camera in Flax Bourton has been destroyed after being rammed by a man driving a dumper truck - just four days after it was put in.

The mystery camera wrecker drove the yellow dumper truck into the speed camera, in the lay-by opposite the Jubilee Inn, on Thursday evening.

The drama was watched by former Flax Bourton Parish Council chairman Michael Barnes, who was enjoying a meal with his son in the pub.

Mr Barnes said: "My son and I were having a meal in the Jubilee at about 7.30pm when we saw this dumper truck in the lay-by manoeuvre and crash into the
camera base, knocking the top off and bending the post over to a 45 degree angle.

It's called a cabaret, Mr Barnes.....

"It then pulled back and drove off at about 10mph towards Backwell.

"I rang the police immediately but apparently they couldn't catch him."

This is the third time the camera has been attacked.

On two previous occasions vandals set fire to the safety device.

Luckily, during the latest attempt, the actual camera was not in the casing.

Mr Barnes said: "It was very lucky the camera itself was not in there.

"On Monday the camera housing was put up and on Wednesday electrical work was carried out.

"I know not everyone agrees with the use of speed cameras, but there are alternative ways to make protests.

"To vandalise a road safety camera is just pure vandalism and extremely irresponsible."

It is understood the casing for the camera costs around £10,000, with the camera itself costing £30,000.

The camera site is the responsibility of the Avon, Somerset and Gloucestershire Safety Camera Partnership.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

Don't all phone at once......

After a few drinks i can laugh along with the rest of you about this.
The bit that ferks my brain into anger mode is when the dumbtossers refer to em as a "safety device"! Like go and BOLLOX!
Its a darn sight safer now its been knocked over.
Chalk it up as another victory for the driver.

safety cameras...pfff ram em up the councillors bottom i say!

I understand that the Safety Pratnership has just had it's pictures back from the chemists.

One of a low flying RAF Harrier, 1 Nimrod, 2 UFO's travelling in excess of 1500 mph, and a Peregrin Falcon in a vertical dive at over 100 mph.

They are presently wondering where to send the NIPs!

£10k for the camera housing ? That's an obscene amount of money for a grey metal box and post No wonder they want to catch so many speeders in the name of "safety".

And what other ways would they be then Mr Barnes?

Obviously a real hero this chap, if he felt that strongly about it at the time, why didn't he go and have a word with the perpetrator before he made his "swift" getaway Very public spirited of him . Still, at least he managed to get his little soundbite of indignation into the local rag. I'd have more respect for him if he just shut up, and enjoyed the show.

I would have had even more respect for him if he had shut up and video'd the show, blurred out the offending vehicles numberplate then hosted it publicly on the internet for all to download for free

Its £10K for the install not the housing the bulk of which would be providing power

Marvelous chap, now I know where my vote for sports personality of the year is going. (It has now been declared a sport hasn’t it, destroying these bloody things)

Mr Barnes’ council evidently gets some of the loot from the thieving “partnership”.
I thought the Government was having a clamp down on organized criminal gangs?
Makes sense to start with the ones making the most illegal money first.

Ah yes, I know this camera well. It's on the A370 coming out of Bristol. It's been missing for ages, I think last time it got the old flaming tyre treatment I thought they got the message that people didn't want this one, but guess not. All I can say is congrads to the culpit

edited to add, here's a pic of the camera pre-modification

O well....they'll just have to set the trigger speeds lower on other cameras to pay for the damaged one...

Still......"mustn't grumble"
