Early August I got caught in my Chim on the A11 at Snetterton towards Norwich - took 3 months for the summons to come through, but they took a really nice pic of me doing 99mph! It's my first offence in almost 20 years of driving & riding, I'm pleading guilty by post (I live in Basingstoke), and I'm an above average wage earner I guess - anyone any experience of what the good magistrates of Norfolk are going to throw at me??

This might be better in Speed & plod.
You'll probably get summoned to attend court, as I'm not sure they can ban you by post, and it is on the cards (I think from 96 upwards)
As you are clean you should get 6 points, and about £300 - £500 fine. (It is roughly a weeks pay).
If they are in a particularly bad mood it will probably be 14 -28 day ban, but then you get no points.

What is the limit on this stretch of road?
I got stopped (laser) doing 81mph in a 50 dual carriageway and was fined £140 plus costs and 6 points.
As has been said you may not have the option of pleading via post, in any event this course of action may lead to a ban.
It always pays to go to court in these instances. Make sure you account for all your expenses.

A few years ago, I also was found doing 99 mph on the M62 (99.7 to be precise).
The copper said that it was going to court as he knew I was going considerably quicker but saw him & shifted a lot of speed very quickly.
I pleaded guilty, got 6 point & £500 fine.
Think the points stay for 3 years, although you have to declare them for 5.

What were you caught by? I use that road a lot and have never seen cameras on it, although there are signs...you've got me worried now as I was on that road on Sunday....
Anyway, I can only tell you what I got when caught speeding a couple of years ago on the A11.

These days every Tom Dick and Harriet goes faster so ban over 100 is pure myth. In 70 zone, expect 5 points on a clean licence, 6 if marked. Fine depends on declared income, if you don't declare, asume average and at that speed expect £200 to £250. If you declare and show off disposable income, expect more, maybe £350.

I know the road, from when I lived in Fakenham...
I think you wholeheartedly deserve the 5 points...and the fine doesn't surprise me at all....
However, I just wish our 'system' would punish the scummy ones just as much. ie: if they can't afford the fine, lets have the Plasma screen tv...the dvd player or the 5 year old people carrier that they manage to afford.

Obviously, I don't know the exact section of the road...etc..
but if one travels at 99mph on a road subject to a national speed limit and doesn't observe a speed camera of BiB, then one expects to be prosecuted.
There are magistrates who will disqualify a driver at that speed, so one must be grateful to get only 5 points.
There has to be a detterent to breaking the law, whether we agree with the law or not. Some people can safely handle/control a vehicle at those speeds and many many more can't. However it's impossible to properly police who can and who can't drive safely at that speed and therefor anybody caught gets done.
I've done those speeds in a private car (before I was a copper and saw the punishments and consequences)...and would have fully accepted any punishment given under the believe that I knew the limit, I knew what I was doing and would have taken it on the chin.
...but 5 points? I would have expected 3 being as he was not even in 3 figures. You don't know the surrounding conditions/factors.
Disqualification at 99mph = taking away livelihood = family can't afford next meal or mortgage on house = lives ruined - and for what? Surely the judicial system is not meant to turn a safe offender into a criminal (driving while disqualified) or put them on the dole?

well hang on - 5 points aint disqualification is it? In fact its pretty lenient as it even allows for 2 more 'oops' moments before being banned on totting.
I think its a harsh combination (that's a damn high fine for speeding - think your average wage must be reasonably good!), but the points are very fair.....
