SPOT ON....
These are the ones that are killing themselves and their mates....
These are the ones that the message NEEDS to be getting across to...
Can't believe you're poo-pooing this...
Mate, if it was "Sorry I was drunk". Or "sorry I was driving like an utter w*nker" then I'd be with you.
As stated, and as you know all too well, speed is the primary cause of very few accidents.
Driving like a w*nker is the cause of rather more.

Hmmm
Are we talking about the idiots who drive around without consideration for the type of car they are driving, road conditions, etc. Those who are driving to 'impress' their gf and mates? If so okay.
Or are we aiming this at the bloke who was doing 75 down a '3 lane wide' A road, 1am, cool, dry, summer night when an escaped cow runs infront of the car?
We're aiming at the kind of driver who I'm dealt with a few months ago who trying to impress his girlfriend and her friend in his Saxo..lots control as they entered a roundabout and struck a tree in the middle of it...
They all survived, but his girlfriend will never make a facial model and the girl in the back wont have control of her bladder or legs ever again...
THAT sort of person..!

But we tested it among people in the target age group and while they didn't like it they admitted it made them stop and think,"what is this moronic, simplistic bullshit?"
Yet another dipstick said:
" We think the card brings home the potentially terrible consequences of driving too fast, although we cant be arsed to elaborate on what that actually means because we're idiots with a money-scam-fetish and are far too self important. Look at me!"

Covered by "driving like a w*nker" I think.
3% of deaths from excess speed...
10% of deaths from falling asleep at the wheel...
And which generates more income from the motorist!
Sorry, IMHO it's emotive bollox.
Now if the message was about observation ,which leads younger drivers into dangerous situations in the first place I might not be so sceptical.

same thing
Not really.
50mph in the fog chucking it into corners on a NSL tiny B road is "driving like a w*nker". So is chucking a hatchback into a roundabout at the speed limit in the wet and hoping it will stick.
Making progress on a clear road in good conditions with correct observation and intelligent decisions with regard to speed is advanced driving.
And certainly speeding.

The last 4 out of 5 fatal RTCs in my area were as the result of a driver aged 17-24yrs..who was exceeding the speed limit to the point of losing control and leaving the carraigeway colliding with street furniture.
Ouch. Fair point then.
I know I sound a bit..."bloody young uns" etc....but it really is the trend at the moment...the deaths are the young inexperienced drivers; between 12months experience and 5 years........
I, and my colleagues, try to get the message across when we stop them, about safety and all that...but it's like talking to a brick wall at times..
The wierd thing is; the driver that we stop for breakneck speed is often a friend of someone who has recently died in the town in such an accident...

Did you see the case in Scotland earlier this week? Four kids (17 and under) all killed. They're being reasonably sensitive about it. Apparently "Speed" is a theory as to the reason why it happened.
Of course there are no witnesses.
And, of course, there is the possibility of a mechanical failure.
But anyone looking at such a story is going to make the reasonable assumption that the 17 year old driver was driving like a loon and with a great deal of inappropriate speed.
One should not become so sensitive about speeding (when we know that so much of it is perfectly safe) that one rules out the possibility that it may indeed have been the cause of a prang.
Inappropriate speed can and does kill.
Breaking speed limits does not unless combined with inappropriate speed.
Given new young drivers are unlikely to be as skilled as expert drivers who have spent years getting extra training and practicing Roadcraft they are much more likely to misjudge appropriate speed. Indeed they are also more likely to suffer from a case of bravado. In this case whilst it is important to encourage them to get extra training it is also worthwhile encouraging them to be cautious.
Maybe this does that?
Or maybe they could pull no punches and have a campaign along the lines of:
"Go ahead and drive like a t**t. Kill yourself. At least your best mate will get to **** your girlfriend."

Sobering.....
I've often wondered exactly why the police do not hand out IAM/RoSPA info packs to dodgy drivers. Is there any obviously sensible reason?
