August 27th M25 54mph in a 40 - Clackett Lane
Discussion
My wife has just called to tell me that shes been sent a ticket for doing 54mph in 40 last week on the Clacket Lane section of the M25.
Does anybody know if there's a way of finding out why variable speed limits have been in place on a particular date/time?
She was clocked doing 54mph in a 40 on the M25 at 6.30pm so Im guessing there must have been an accident or something but is there anywhere to check this out online?
Thanks

Thanks for your help - nope she cant remember there being a variable limit at the time & seems a strange time to have 1 set at 40mph so just interested to see why it was set at such a low speed really.
She commutes from Kent to Gatwick for work so is vigilant of the speed limits due to all of the new speed cameras that have popped up on this stretch so for her not to remember a 40mph limit during a recent rush hour is a bit odd, thats not to say it didn't happen though!
I'll email the highways dept and see if I get anywhere, doubt i will - thanks for your help.

If it's at Clackett Lane then it will be the HADECS3 camera. They will have photographic evidence of the temporary speed limit being displayed as there is a pole with 3 CCTV cameras mounted approx 200 yards before the gantry. See this photo for how it works. Bottom 2 pics are the ones taken by the speed camera, top left pic is taken from the CCTV cameras 200 yards before the gantry to prove what speed limit was being displayed at the time.Does anybody know if there's a way of finding out why variable speed limits have been in place on a particular date/time?

In summary, man up and get your wallet out!

No help to your case, but I saw an empty M25 a few weeks ago that went 60>50>40>50>50>50.
There were no roadworks, nothing in the road, etc. About 10 cars on the road. I did slow, but many didn't.
See this regularly, it makes a mockery of the system of variable speed limits. There were no roadworks, nothing in the road, etc. About 10 cars on the road. I did slow, but many didn't.
I phoned the highways agency once to report it but they didn't seem interested.

I recently broke down on that stretch and managed to get into one of the safety areas. AA turned up and decided to take me to Clacket Lane. As it was just a transit with a towing dolly they spoke to HA who put a 40 limit in place to allow him to pull out safely.
Of course if you were coming past 1 min after we had pulled out you would think it was in place for no reason as you'd just see a car being towed in L1 but nothing else causing an obstruction

That's absolutely fine (no pun intended) but if I (in this case my wife) have been accused of something, I'd like to see evidence of it - not just a letter with nothing supporting it.In summary, man up and get your wallet out!
Anyway, emailed the highways agency and they CAN provide details of why the variable limit was in place on a given date/time.
My wife's quite happy to just pay the fine and take the points but I want to see proof

Except that is not what you are asking for.You aren't asking for proof that the limit was 40, you are asking for proof of why the limit was 40. Why do you think you are entitled to this?

Im asking why the limit was 40mph during a rush hour - I'm entitled to ask anything like thanks very much & under the freedom of information act, anybody can access that information (as per the email from the highways agency). You aren't asking for proof that the limit was 40, you are asking for proof of why the limit was 40. You may have answered your own question. But for what purpose though?
Either it was or it wasn't. If it was then she is banged to rights. The reason in irrelevant and you are just causing all involved extra work and costs, unless you have some secret agenda in mind.
