I quite like having a screen. Shows you the limit and what time of trap it is - useful confirmation imho.
I only use the screen on my RA as an accurate true speedometer, which means I can go faster than everyone else that think they are doing 90mph
sounds like a road pilot......
Folks
I decided to go for one of these and it arrived a few days ago and works OK. however, When I tried to find out about getting a cable for it to be able to talk to a pocket PC for navigation, it turns out they cannot actually supply one "as there are so many different models and plugs avilable". i.e. they are making claims which cannot be fulfilled.
Mines going back.

Out of interest where does it say this? Had a quick scan of the web site but it wasn't immediately obvious.
The person i spoke to said he would immediately remove the reference to this capability from their website (it used to be in specifications) and to be fair it looks like they have. However if you check out some of the agents selling this they still have the misleading text as follows from Dabs.com ;
INFORAD conforms to the NMEA-0183 v2.0 GPS* standard
When connected to a PC (cable provided) or a PDA (cable optional), INFORAD can also serve as an inexpensive navigation system for the likes of Autoroute Express TM , TomTom, Navigator TM and Route 66 during normal operation.
Cheers

Those of you handy with a soldering iron can build one

It's under January : the "EPE Camera Watch". ; basically a PIC Micro wired to a GPS receiver.

Tav, you said it works OK - problems with other devices have been loss of signal, not detecting sites, picking up sites in the wrong direction. did the inforad work properly other than the PDA link; how reliable was it? the closest alternative is something like a talex at 3 times the price. also, it looks pretty ugly on the picture, is it?
hello,
Its not exactly pretty, but its smaller than I expected so in that respect I could live with it. The power comes from a usb cable which uses a converter plugged into the lighter socket which is a bit messy and on my car slightly gets in the way of the gear lever. It picked up satellites with no problem, but did drop the signal once for a few seconds for no obvious reason (it beeps when it does this)
For function, it picked up the cameras I knew about in the area and the 'overspeed warning' appears to work OK. My experience suggests it is not directional so warns you about cameras on the other side of the road. Also I live near Reading and it keeps going off on the M4 near junction 10 where I am guessing there may be cameras on the A329 which runs underneath. the warning noises are basic and annoying but I think fair given the price.
All in all if you are looking for a cheap solution then it is OK and it does most of what it says it does. Bear in mind I only used it for a few days.
Apart from the issues mentioned earlier I feel it is good for the price. How good the database is, is something that would take a lot longer to judge.
Hope this helps -

Does it work as specified with a pc as a gps antenna?
I was thinking of having one installed in the car for its intended purpose 99% of the time, and then if travelling somewhere unusual plugging it into my laptop and using it as guide.

What I meant was, since the description needs to be amended due to it not working with a PDA due to a non existant cable, would I have an issue connecting it to a lappy?
Anyone actually done this?
Thanks in advance
