People who close the gap when you overtake them
Discussion
This happened to me again on Sunday. I was coming back from a charity off road event in wales in the Land Rover, making reasonable progress, unlike the majority of people on the road. I was nipping past car after car, all without any aggravation from anyone, when a driver, with family, in a green Mondeo estate partial reg CU02... decided in his infinite wisdom to close right up on the car infront as I went to pull in.
What is it with these F**kw**s. Did he seriously think I was going to not pull in and risk hitting an oncoming vehicle. What goes on in their tiny minds. In my opinion this is probably the most intentionally dangerous thing someone can do.
Anyway much to his surprise I pulled in, as in all honesty I wasnt going to lose if he didnt brake.
What can be done? Is it worth reporting him?
That has happened to me twice now. I dont know if it is because I am in a Land Rover, or because he thought that sitting in convoy of vehicles doing 36mph was acceptable, but these people need to be removed from the road.
*ng c*ck
Pete.

If you want an honest answer...
1) Its not worth reporting him. Overtaking is, sadly, seen as a dangerous manouvre
and its more likely to end up with you being hauled up for a Dangerous Driving charge for having the audacity to try and pass another car...
2) Yes. Its because you are in a Land Rover. Particularly if it was a Defender. They are seen as being "slow" vehicles. To be fair - its because they often are. Their forte is not charging down A roads at 60mph - its pulling entire trees out of the ground on a muddy field at 5mph. People often do not wish a Landy to overtake as they percieve that once the road opens up they will be held up. This is not an excuse, mind, just an observation.
3) Some drivers are not actually even being malicious when they close up the gap. They are just so surprised by being woken up out of their daydream and being overtaken that their right leg involuntarily jerks and spasms depressing the accelerator.
4) Its possible that this guy was simply a cnut. It happens. It appears that many, otherwise ordinary individuals, believe that, once past, you will immediately drive to their house, rape their mother, wife and children, burn it down and then make your getaway. Naturally they are keen to prevent you getting there first.
Sorry, mate. But you are going to have to live with this one. If you think the numpties treat you badly in your Landy...try driving about in a bright red Porsche.

I honestly think that fewer and fewer people now pass slower cars. It just seems the norm to sit there for mile after mile at a steady 35mph on which ever road. I was always taught to make progress and thats what I do, safely.
But I agree with you Pete, there are far too many numpties out there these days..

Some years ago I witnessed the following amusing incident. I had moved up to third behind a campervan. In front were two 'rep-mobiles'. I checked my mirror and saw a Carlton making progress behind. He passed me and the two cars in front and made to pull in behind the campervan. The leading 'rep-mobile' immediately closed the gap.
The Carlton bullied its way in and a scrolling sign in the rear window displayed "P.U.L.L...O.V.E.R and little blue lights set in the back of the rear headrests began to twinkle.

He might have been after me, as I had been moving quickly but only up to the limit (I'd tagged him as 'suspect' earlier ... two up, no dangling dollies, two interior mirrors, that sort of thing), but the 'rep-mobile' driver gave him a much better opportunity to exercise his sarcasm

I was having a bit of fun on the way in this morning. Passed a few cars at not a great deal more than 60mph and I came up behind a 4wd pickup. As soon as he saw me he drove out to the middle of the road. I have such a huge power advantage he was never going to stop me overtaking, so I passed him (he was only doing 50-55mph in a 60).
Upset him so much that when we entered town and I resumed sensible mode he drove past me in the queue of traffic and cut in front of me. I knew he was going to do it so I didn't even bother trying to stop him. I actually thought it was quite funny so I just laughed at him.
Complete gimp, though. Nobody likes to be overtaken and regardless of what speed they're doing, some people will try to obstruct you. A bit like the thread currently going about letting motorcycles pass.

It used to be only oncoming traffic that you had to be aware of when overtaking. Now you have to wonder weather the space you were after is going to be there for you.
It happens to me a lot these days although mainly where 2 lanes merge into one - do these drivers really have such small dicks
Question for the Bib or anyone else in the know. What is the situation if someone closes the gap on you and you have no choice but to cut them up and hit them. I assume its your "fault" for overtaking and the

The Highway Code says you should let other vehicles overtake so in theory, you've done nothing wrong.
UK just seems to be turning into a very bitter place. Especially on the roads. Who had every heard of road rage a few years back?
Mind numbing speed limits and robotic policing are not helping and are probably contributing.
Here’s the icing on the cake, which I’ve had the pleasure to taste.
When you’ve been left out to dry and you see the oncoming car is getting a bit close for comfort, so you play it safe and brake to fall behind said f***wit, only to have them also match your deceleration - all the way to a complete stop.
I’m still annoyed with myself for not going mental on that @@.

I've observed my sister doing this.. But it is not malicious, out of the corner of her eye she sees a car going past her - unconsiously she believes she is slowing down, so gently increases pressure on the accelerator pedal to "maintain" her perceived speed.
Thankfully she is aware of the problem and catches herself when she does it.......
Not everyone out there is an
hole just most of them....

ts who decide to leave 2ft gap who are the ones who do it deliberately. The escalating problem with very slow traffic in long, snaking lines is one of the worst by-products of the speed camera/speed enforcement theatre to which the average motorist reacts by feeling so intimidated by the law that they drive way below the limits so they don't have to think about it.
The resultant traffic congestion is in proportion to the degree of escalation of the enforcement.
If you come along and appear to be an unintimidated, talented driver, you tend to be resented by the sheep, and they will perform this kind of suicidal act as a reaction, and to put you in your place for daring to be a good driver.
Every year in Scotland people are killed through the actions of these drivers closing gaps; it is a desperately serious and increasingly common problem.
The police almost never do anything about it, but they really need to, and now.
We need a specific offence for this punishable by a monster fine and corresponding ban; it would appear that is the only thing the sheep respond to.
What a great many of them fail to realise in beauty spots like the north of Scotland, is that a great many of us are actually working and don't have the time to sit at 25 MPH admiring the magnificent scenery, and all you are asking them to do is allow you to overtake.
Why is that such a problem for these people??

I visit the Highlands as often as I can. You know...I have found Scots drivers to be excellent for the most part. They are *used* to pulling over for overtakes in the Single Track roads and so don't mind so much if you overtake 'em generally!
There are even signs "Frustration Causes Accidents - Please Allow Overtaking!"...
All the local tourist pamphlets exhort visitors to pull over for locals - who make so much better progress as they are used to the roads and Highland conditions and, frankly, use observation up the road much more effectively as they have to.
I'm convinced that Highland accidents must involve a high proportion of non-local drivers...

this has happened to me so many times...especially in the mini. it seems that these people with extraordinarily small dicks resent being overtaken, it's almost as if they are annoyed that you saw a gap that they didn't, or that they feel as their car is more expensive then they should be given respect by cheaper cars, or that they've somehow "lost face" by being overtaken... tossers without exception.
when it happens I don't let it stop me - if i've been committed to the overtake I simply force my way in and extend the friendly one fingered salute followed by a swift overtake on the next car and away...
it used to be called "nip&tuck" and was perfectly acceptable but not anymore...
on a happier note, on the way back from skegness on monday I followed a V8 discovery full up with a family + accoutrements that was being driven very well, overtaking neatly and quite swift too! it was highly amusing to witness!

Spot on Don. You can always spot the locals.
Do you remember the Diabaig road?
Long-time local told me that she couldn't remember a single accident on it, despite them having to use it all year round.
Must be fun with a bit of black ice.

I did a post about this before Don.
The first summer I lived in Skye there were five deaths, all caused by tourists from a certain nation that lives below sea level quite a lot of the time, (I'm bloody sure I'm not being accused of racism on here again!)
Not one was prosecuted or even charged; utterly unacceptable!
In the winter when the weather is atrocious there is hardly a bump.
I frequently saw 135 on my Quattro on single track roads; never a problem in the winter.
The summer was a total nightmare!
What are the police doing about it?
Speed cameras.
Agree about Scots drivers, they seem to notice you straight away in their mirror and indicate left to let you past as soon as they can. Marvellous! But further south and you'd think it was an insult to the size of their thingy to allow you to overtake without theatrical gesturing and a bit of gap closing.
psimpson7 said:I had this from the other perspective - a Range Rover driver didn't want to let me in (his was 4th in a row I wanted to pass on a straight stretch)...but he'd enough power to latch himself to the tail of the 206 in front before I could get there...and as his car weighed 2x mine, I wasn't about to argue and nailed the brakes (car just appeared over brow heading other way). At this point he arrogantly jerked his thumb back over his shoulder and shook his head at me, to say "get behind me". What a f*****g w****r.

Wasn't even his car - was a bright orange G4 company car (MY company!!!)...which could explain why he was willing to risk denting it (LOTS of bull-bars all round too). Made a complaint at work...never got anywhere, as the security manager drives a R-Rover himself and hates "Jap crap" - conveniently ignored all my e-mails and doesn't answer his phone.

Quick question Iolaire. Long time ago seem to remember the Skye Marble lorries used to :ahem: make progress. Lots of double black lines from twin wheel into the passing places. How are things today?
