I have just tried to tax my car after it being off the road for several months for maintenance, It was built in 1958 so its exempt from the cost of Tax. I got the MOT done on Saturday, went to tax it today with a V10 form and the Post office tell me I have to send it to a Vehicle reg office near me as I dont have the renewal notice, ''cos its been under a SORN for 6 months. I called them and I have to send my logbook/mot/Insurance to them for a disc to be issued. So, I will do this today, can I legally drive the car? or do I have to wait for the disc to return? Or does it depend on the individual if I get stopped by a jam sarny?

Yep, the MOT ran out over a year ago, and I have spent time+money over winter replacing/upgrading parts, hence unable to renew. I have done it before at PO's but only with a renewal notice, which is pretty much what they said. I guess the official answer is what you say, no disc display=illegal, but I was hoping to hear that a copper would probably accept my plight and give me a producer to prove I get the tax disc issued?

technically an offence but if the docs are in order it would be down to the individual copper, Me personally I would let it go if you had everything with you. Maybe I'm going soft ? who knows

Problem solved, took my log book back to the PO today, and as it states Historic Vehicle as the tax class, they were happy to issue a disc. So I can now go out totally legally!! (if it stops f**king raining) Thanks for the response anyway John.
